Ken Davis - America's Favorite Historian - 4th of July
As we work our way towards Independence Day on July 4th, here are a few fascinating facts about the document that created the United States of America and the day that the nation was born. –First of all, we celebrate the wrong day –as far as John Adams was concerned. The Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, actually voted on a resolution of independence on July 2d. John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that this day would be a day of history that would be marked with bonfires, church bells ringing and “illuminations” –or fireworks. He was right about all the other details but missed on the date. The date of the adoption of Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence became fixed on the national calendar. –Although Jefferson was the chief author of the Declaration, he was a member of a committee of five men charged with drafting a declaration that would explain why the colonies were separating from England. The others were John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman of Connecticut and Robert Livingston of New York, who was not an advocate of independence. –“Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of ?“ Jefferson borrowed from a phrase used by other writers, including fellow Virginian George Mason, who had written about “life, liberty and the pursuit of property.”
Here is a link to Jefferson’s draft as it was presented to Franklin and Adams with some of his changes shown:
http://www.ushistory.org/Declaration/document/rough.htm
–Congress also made some changes. The most significant was the deletion of a paragraph in which Jefferson charged that King George III was responsible for the slave trade. That was dropped, Jefferson later noted, in deference to the men who owned slaves as well as those who made a great deal of money transporting them. Remember, some of the largest slave ports were in the northern colonies. –The July 4th vote was not unanimous. The vote tally was by each state delegation. New York abstained on July 4 and voted to approve the Declaration on July 9th, making it unanimous. All thirteen colonies were now aboard. –The signers didn’t sign –at least not on July 4th. Only two men actually signed the July 4th version: John Hancock, President of the Congress and Charles Thomson, serving as secretary. The actual signing ceremony took place on August 2, 1776. And even then, only 50 of the 56 signers were present to sign. –The first celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8th when the Declaration was read publicly for the first time. The “Liberty Bell,” a name that was not given to the famous symbol of freedom until the early 19th century, was rung. But it didn’t crack then. That came later. The words inscribed at the top of the Liberty Bell read, “Proclaim Liberty throughout All the land unto All the Inhabitants Thereof.” And no, Taco Bell did not buy the rights to the Liberty Bell — that was a very successful April Fools Day joke. (Yes, they got me.) –Words on back? Sorry no secret, invisible treasure map as in the movie National Treasure. But the words “Original Declaration of Independence, dated 4th July 1776″ are written on the back of the parchment version now displayed in the National Archives.

The majority of Americans are fruit and vegetable deficient! In fact, 70% of Americans are not getting enough fruit in their daily diets, despite the USDA Dietary Guidelines recommendation to consume four servings, or two cups, of fruit a day as part of an overall healthy diet based on an average 2,000-calorie diet. And, this includes kids too - according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, on any given day, 45 percent of kids eat no fruit and 20 percent of kids eat less than one serving of vegetables. Just in time for National Fruit & Vegetable Month (June), Registered Dietitian Elizabeth Ward shares tips for squeezing more fruits and vegetables into your diet.

Roberta L. Duyff - food and nutrition expert

Dubbed by Gourmet magazine as the “Year of the Home Cook,” families are being forced back into the kitchen by the economy. But unlike moms in the 70’s, today’s busy moms are faced with a new challenge – shoring up basic home ec skills that they might not necessarily have.
A recent Rutgers study – funded by the Canned Food Alliance – confirms that moms flounder when it comes to basic kitchen know-how. However, what the study also showed was when given a roadmap for healthy meal prep, grocery shopping, kitchen organization and food storage practices, positive changes were made.

FLASHBACK - "867-5309/Jenny" - Tommy Tutone
Tommy Tutone is a
power pop-rock band, best known for its 1982 hit " Jenny," which peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Although it is usually referred to as a San Francisco band, it was actually based in Willits, California, at the time that "Jenny" was released. The song became so popular that people in the United States to this day dial this telephone number and ask for Jenny as a prank. Regarding the famous number, "We had people threatening to sue us. It was the Buffalo Chief of Police's daughter's number in New York," said frontman Tommy Heath. Although the band is frequently remembered as a one-hit wonder, it had another top-40 hit on the Hot 100 with "Angel Say No" in 1980, predating "Jenny" by a couple of years. A common misconception is that Tommy Tutone is the name of the lead singer; it is actually the name of the band. Tommy Heath is the lead singer. The name of the band developed from its original name, Tommy and the Tu-tones, to merely Tommy Tutone.

FLASHBACK - MONKEES MINI CONCERT
The Monkees were a pop singing quartet assembled in Los Angeles in
1966 for the American television series The Monkees, which aired from 1966 to 1968. The primary members were Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Englishman Davy Jones, who were the public face of a music production system under the supervision of Don Kirshner.
At the time of the band's formation, its producers saw The Monkees as a
boy band. At the start, the band members provided vocals, and were given some performing and production opportunities, but they eventually fought for and earned the right to collectively supervise all musical output under the band's name. The group undertook several concert tours, allowing an opportunity to perform as a live band as well as on the TV series. Although the show was cancelled in 1968, the band continued releasing records until 1970. In the 1980s, the television show and music experienced a revival, which led to a series of reunion tours, and new records featuring various incarnations of the band's lineup.

Jeff Wilser "The Maxims of Manhood: 100 Rules Every Real Man Must Live By"

Your dog must be larger than a toaster. Tip well. Never use the word "blossom." Outperform the GPS. Know how to chug a beer (and know that you shouldn't). Always hold the door. Never use emoticons. These are The Maxims of Manhood. They cover every aspect of life: women, sports, sex, the office, family, entertainment, fashion, fitness, and more women. Some of these you'd expect. Some you wouldn't, as they usher in a modern code of masculinity (Your favorite book may not be The Da Vinci Code). In a series of 100 essays, the rules are analyzed, explained, vigorously defended and openly mocked. Every rule has an authorized exception. Except the ones that don't. This book might not be for you. It's only intended for people who fall into one of these seven buckets: 1) you are a man; 2) you will become a man; 3) you were once a man; 4) you are related to a man; 5) you are dating or have married a man; 6) you think that in the future, perhaps, you will date or marry a man; 7) you know, or think that at some point you will know--whether casually or formally--a man. Based in New York, Jeff Wilser has been researching the Maxims of Manhood for over 25 years, ever since he felt guilty for breaking the rule "Never cry at the movies"--he was six; the movie was E.T. This book is his atonement. A former USMC Reserves squad leader, Wilser has been a regular online contributor to sites like GQ, MTV, and VH1, writing about dating, sex, nightlife, and pop culture. He's met many men.
