Dr. Scott Baldrige, PhD  "Singapore Math"
As schools across America face budget cuts while our students continue to test below many other countries internationally, especially in math, educators are turning their attention to a math program from the country of Singapore as a solution. Dr. Scott Baldrige, PhD, a co-author of the leading US text book for elementary school math teacher-training and expert on Singapore Math is available to speak about the significance of this curriculum and what it means for American students.  “Singapore Math”, as the curriculum is dubbed, has consistently ranked first in the world in mathematics on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study while U.S. students ranked 16th out of 46 participating nations. Some of the major differences with the Singapore Math approach are that it involves a unique pictorial approach to math allowing students to look at problems in a visual way, before moving into abstract, and it focuses on a limited number of topics each year, allowing students to master a concept before building on it. The result is that Singapore Math has spread to a sampling of schools and districts in all 50 states, and has even been approved for use statewide in California, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Oregon and adopted in some 40 countries.

  1. My kids use Singapore Math to supplement Chicago Project's Everyday Math they do at school. Singapore Math is better b/c it has more math fact drill than Everyday Math, plus it's more visual and intuitive. My kids use it when their "new math" at school confuses them. Singapore Math explains difficult concepts such as carry subtraction in a clear way that we all understand. I am told by my Mom Friend who were teachers that the school districts in the U.S. who use the Singapore Math curriculum score the highest in the U.S. I would not be surprised!

Singapore outscores the rest of the world in math.
