11/8-Monica Szepesy, Ronnie Cox

Monica Szepesy-Owner, Q'ero Restaurant
The main street of downtown Encinitas hosts a variety of independent shops and restaurants, yet this gem is often unnoticed by tourists. Of course, the locals know it well, visiting this spot daily for fresh baked treats. Many customers opt for a slice of Zucchini Bread or Carrot Cake. Yet, those "in the know" will inform you that nothing beats the fresh-baked bread rolls, still warm from the oven, served with homemade raspberry jam. Consider a cup of homemade Apple Cider along with your bread.

Ronnie Cox-Global Brand Heritage Director for The Glenrothes Single Malt Scotch

Born the 7th generation in a Whisky distilling family I soon realized that distilling was fun but selling a delight. It was about sharing with likeminded souls what I thought as the Spirit of God’s Own Country. The discovery of The Glenrothes changed my life as it epitomised the elite of Single Malts – the Premier Cru.
My favourite Glenrothes are definitely the elegance of the 1987 before dinner, and a 1972 – post dinner delight. They’ve both gone and I don’t really want to tell you my current favourite Vintages for fear of the same thing happening! Though the fruity, butterscotch flavours of the 1991 with pudding is always a great joy.
I have never thought it unusual to sample the wonders of a Single Malt alone nor do I think it vital to see an art exhibition with others. These are pleasures in life which can be enhanced with the right people who share and appreciate the greater things in life but if it’s just you and your alter ego then so be it. In my book, a Single Malt is best enjoyed outside in summer on a Scottish riverbank discussing a day’s fishing, or as an appetiser to a Brazilian barbecue or after dinner in a leather chair in a baronial castle enjoying conversation and music. These moments are as magical to me as an eclipse of the sun.
Now go and try surprising a friend with a bottle from the deep freeze. Or, just try surprising a bottle when it’s least expecting you. It will always taste delicious and give pleasure unselfishly.
