Greg Crister  -  "Eternity Soup"  - "Somebody's Gotta Die to make room"
Bringing his signature wit and insight to the field of biogerentology, Critser (Fat Land, Generation Rx) produces a vigorous report of frontier science, charlatanry, and hope for a new, much longer, way of life. Beginning with a discussion with his septuagenarian parents, eternity%20soup%201.pngho receive "compounded hormone" treatment from a "longevity doctor," Critser travels the U.S. to investigate the enterprises "forging onward into a brave new pro-longevist world." (Crister's own horse in the race-besides finding the natural aging process "cruel, capricious and unrelenting"-is a "form of accelerated brain aging" he suffers as a result of a concussion.) Crister's first stop is a gathering of the Caloric Restriction Society, which advocates minimal caloric intake as a way of slowing cell damage; a conference breakfast consists of five blueberries and three potato chips. More trendy, and pricey, is hormone treatment, which claims to "add thirty years to maximum life span," backed up by promising trials on mice (though more recent studies have called the science into question). Critser's own course of treatment turns out ambiguously, but sends him to an intriguing third line of research, bio-engineering replacement body parts and other tissues from a patient's own cells. A light and critical eye makes this excursion into front-end science an entertaining, enlightening trek.

Adam Cohen  "Nothing to Fear"
Adam Cohen is assistant editorial page editor of The New York Times, where he has been a member of the editorial board since 2002. He was previously a senior writer at Time and is the author of The Perfect Store: Inside eBay and a coauthor of American Pharaoh, a biography of ... Bernstein: Nothing To FearMayor Richard J. Daley. Before entering journalism, Cohen was an education-reform lawyer, and he has a law degree from Harvard. Thirty-second president Franklin Delano Roosevelt assumed the presidency at a time of unbelievable national crisis. When he took his oath of office in March 1933, more than 10,000 banks had gone under following the Crash of 1929, a quarter of American workers were unemployed, and riots were breaking out at garbage dumps as people fought over scraps of food. Now in paperback, NOTHING TO FEAR: FDR's Inner Circle and the Hundred Days that Created Modern America brings to life this fulcrum moment in American history—the tense, frenzied first one hundred days, when FDR and his inner circle completely reinvented the role of the federal government. Before the Hundred Days, the federal government was limited in scope and ambition; by the end, it had assumed an active responsibility for the welfare of all of its citizens. FDR came to the White House with few firm commitments about how to resolve these overwhelming troubles—as a politician he was more pragmatic than ideological, and, perhaps surprisingly given his New Deal legacy, by nature a fiscal conservative. He therefore relied heavily on his advisers, especially the five men and women comprising his inner circle. Cohen provides an illuminating group portrait of these colleagues who frequently pushed the president to embrace more radical programs than he would have otherwise. NOTHING TO FEAR is both a riveting narrative account of the personal dynamics that shaped the heady Hundred Days, and a character study of one of America's defining leaders in a moment of crisis. Indeed, many of the political fault lines of this era—welfare, government regulation, and agriculture policy—remain with us today. Coinciding with the landmark inauguration of Barack Obama, who faces a nation similarly embroiled in financial turmoil, Cohen's book is a timely and insightful look at the defining moment of both a president and a presidency.

Joe Piscatella  "American Heart Month - February"
HEALTHY HEART (Workman, February 2010), by Joe Piscatella. Perhaps the longest-surviving bypass patient in the world - 32 years and counting - Joe is poised to deliver the support that American Heart Association ... people with heart disease need.  The secret of his extraordinary success lies in the stories, inspirations, quotes and pieces of wisdom he reads every morning. And those are what he shares in this book. When it's 5:00 A.M. and raining outside and Joe is tempted to skip that morning jog, he remembers "runner" Bob Ireland, a Vietnam vet who lost both legs in the war yet finished the New York marathon using only his arms, the first person ever to do so. Or when Joe is hungry and feeling that a hot dog is calling his name, he stays on a healthy track by recalling what Thomas Edison once said:  "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.  The certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."

As a health expert with more than two decades of experience, she'll explain to your listeners that they don't have to give up some of their favorite foods in order to slim down and impress former classmates or family members.  For many people, reunions — whether a milestone college or high school reunion or extended-family get-together — are not only a chance to reconnect with friends, relatives and long-lost loves, they are also a great weight-loss motivator.  Still, losing weight and getting into shape is challenging at the best of times, and  adding in the stress of looking good for a reunion can make anyone crazy!  The average American gains between one to two pounds a year. While that may not seem like much, by the time your 25th reunion rolls around, you'll be about 30 - 50 pounds heavier than you were on graduation day.

Dan Hurley  "Diabetes Rising"
Dan Hurley
is a science writer and journalist who regularly contributes to The New York Times Science Times. He also writes for numerous medical newspapers, including Neurology Today (the newspaper of the American Academy of Neurology), Gastroenterology and
of Type 2 Diabetes Rising ... Endoscopy News, Pharmacy Practice News, General Surgery News, and others. He has been senior writer at the Medical Tribune and contributing editor to Psychology Today, where his article on the violent mentally ill won the American Society of Journalists and Authors' award for investigative journalism in 1995. He is the former Vice President of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Nearly 90 years after the discovery of insulin, with an estimated $116 billion spent annually on the medical treatment of diabetes in the United States, why is diabetes the one major cause of death that's been relentlessly rising for a century? Diabetes Rising investigates why the nearly two dozen medications approved for type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes, and all the high-tech treatments for type 1 (juvenile-onset) diabetes, are failing to slow this modern pandemic of Western civilization. The book also profiles promising new approaches that are making significant strides toward preventing, curing, or dramatically improving treatment of the disease. Written by Dan Hurley, a regular contributor to the science section of the New York Times (and himself a type 1 diabetic for over 30 years), Diabetes Rising breaks medical news by revealing:

  • The wealthiest town in Massachusetts, where an outbreak of type 1 diabetes among the children has parents up in arms, and a state investigation underway.
  • The county in West Virginia with the highest rate of type 2 diabetes in the country (where Hurley spent an evening with a family of 10 siblings, all of whom have the disease, and the local Wal-Mart proudly announces that it sells more Little Debbie snack cakes than any other Wal-Mart in the world).
  • Why the rate of type 1 diabetes has been rising just as fast and just as long as the rate of type 2, transforming a childhood disease that was once exceedingly rare into one that now affects most elementary school systems in the country.
  • How the "artificial pancreas," long considered a holy grail that would take decades to develop, has now reached the final stages of testing—the book describes Hurley's extraordinary experience participating in one of the world's first clinical trials of the device, and profiles the colorful mavericks pushing the technology forward.
  • Why international diabetes experts believe that three simple, little-known approaches—avoiding cow's milk in baby formulas, getting adequate amounts of vitamin D, and simply playing in the dirt—could prevent many cases of diabetes.
  • Innovative public-health strategies in New York City, Los Angeles and elsewhere that are seeking to attack diabetes today just as campaigns of a century ago defeated communicable diseases—with public-health laws regulating fast-food restaurants.

Janet Little  "Detox For the New Year"  - Henry's  Market
Nutritionist for Henry's Farmers Market, Janet Little CN, share her tips and favorite products for a springtime detoxifying cleanse.   Springtime is my favorite time of year; longer daylight hours, burgeoning flowers, and some internal spring-cleaning. What do I mean by internal spring-cleaning?  Detoxifying !

Henry's Farmers Market is on ... Although most people think of a detox at the beginning of the year, springtime is actually the best time for a cleansing program. During spring, we are outside more in fresh air and becoming more active than we typically are in the winter. Plus, spring brings with it a variety of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables that help our bodies with the detoxification process.   First, and most importantly, you need to be cautious before going on a detoxification program. Check with your doctor first, especially if you are overweight, if you are on any type of medication, if you have blood sugar problems or any other health problems. Our liver is the master cleanser. Did you know that our livers perform over 400 different functions in our bodies, and that almost 2 quarts of blood pass through our liver for detoxification every minute? The liver filters blood to remove toxins, secretes bile full of cholesterol and other fat-soluble toxins, and the liver disassembles unwanted chemicals.  It's a 2-step process in which the liver performs these functions. In phase I, a group of enzymes in the liver, P450, neutralizes some chemicals, and converts others to a more chemically active and toxic form. In phase II detoxification, these active toxic compounds are then neutralized and excreted out of the body.

It all started inauspiciously 100 years ago, when teenager Joyce Clyde Hall from Nebraska stepped off a train in Kansas City with little more than big dreams and two shoeboxes of picture postcards. He rented a room at the YMCA and began wholesaling postcards to retailers in the region.  One hundred years and billions of well-wishes later, Hallmark Cards, Inc., will celebrate its own 100th birthday in 2010 with a nod to the past, a focus on the future, and the grandsons of that Nebraska teenager at the helm. This is a story about how one company's products have captured the zeitgeist of our nation and evolution of our society over the past century. Within our collective shoeboxes are our histories. These saved greeting cards are cherished tangible well-wishes through a century of American history. A century of wars and rationing, the psychedelic 60s and disco 70s, the maturation of the boomers and their children, the changing roles of women and the advance of technology, but still - new babies, wedding celebrations, birthdays and anniversaries remained. Relationships endured. The need for emotional connecting stayed consistent even while the means by which we connected – the images and editorial used in Hallmark's greeting cards – changed to reflect the times. It is an American story preserved one card at a time in Hallmark's vault.

John Lescroart "Treasure Hunt"
New York Times bestselling author John Lescroart has penned twenty novels to date. But when he introduced his character Wyatt Hunt in The Hunt Club three years ago critics and fans couldn't get enough of this compelling character. So much so that The Hunt Club continues to be his bestselling book to date. This January, Lescroart brings private investigator Wyatt Hunt back in TREASURE HUNT (Dutton; On-Sale January 12, 2010; $26.95), a thriller that is driven just Treasure Huntas much by shady politics and backroom deals as it is by murder. And of course as they only can in a Lescroart novel, the dead begin to reveal their secrets and threaten to expose a massive conspiracy that may destroy the lives of San Francisco 's elite.  Business has not been good for Wyatt Hunt. His private investigation firm, The Hunt Club, has become the victim of the hurting economy as well as some recent bad publicity regarding an ex-employee. So when Mickey Dade, a junior associate, stumbles across a body in the lagoon in front of The Palace of Fine Arts, Hunt and Dade sense an opportunity to get the firm up and running again.  The victim is Dominic Como, a prominent civic activist and the head of some of the city's major charities. With the Hunt Club helping to filter tips from the public, Dade and Hunt soon learn that San Francisco 's golden fundraiser was involved in some highly suspect deals, and all of Como 's colleagues seem eager to point the finger at Alicia Thorpe, his new associate. Complicating matters, rumors about Thorpe's troubled upbringing and possible affair with Como start to surface, making her a "person of interest." But in this city where money and power mean everything, the people who were so willing to turn her in may well be hiding their own dark secrets.  A provocative examination of the nature of corruption and character and a look into the city he knows and portrays so well, TREASURE HUNT shows us yet again why Lescroart is one of the most popular thriller writers at work today. John Lescroart is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty previous novels, including A Plague of Secrets, Betrayal, The Suspect, and The Hunt Club. His books have been printed in sixteen languages and published in more than seventy-five countries. He lives in northern California .

Guest #1:
Will Jordan "The Incarnation of Catman Billy"
Born a human spirit in a cat body, an accident Billy soon realizes is no accident, he has to learn anew how to define himself. Before, he never gave any thought to whether cats have personal
problems or issues; he always thought that hunting was something that cats just did, like eatingIncarnation of CatMan Billy ... and sleeping ... until he came back as a cat. Now he's trying to survive while he sees the world through new eyes and negotiates life on four feet. Can the CatMan release the human programming of reactive emotions and move to seeing with clarity? Can Billy transform himself from past human limitation and integrate his growing feline information to act effectively in the world? The adventure tale provides the scene on which Billy explores certainty of being and action, power and clarity. That quirky feline mix of shrewd hunting, independence of spirit and a light-footed curiosity about the universe. His path toward enlightenment is made all the more interesting by his encounters with other feline characters, like Grey, The Hunter of the Night, who teaches him about Spirit energy and how it can be used to forge connections with others, and Elwood, the comically serious cat who shows Billy there's more to life than criticism, fear, and anger (all traits too common in human existence.)

Guest #2:
Don Schmitt "Witness to Roswell"
The best-selling UFO book of 2007/2008 is revised and updated with even more
Witness To Roswellhard-hitting eyewitness testimony of one of the most important events of all time: the actual recovery of a UFO outside of Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. For more than 60 years, government authorities have led us to believe the wreckage was merely a very conventional weather balloon--but the witnesses who were there continue to tell a different story. Witness to Roswell once again takes you on a "can't put down" written account of what really transpired in Roswell, 61 years ago. It pries loose the truth the government doesn't want us to know.

Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema " THE POWER OF WOMEN: Harness Your Unique Strengths at Home, at Work, and in Your Community"
New research by Yale psychologist Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema shows that women today are thriving because they have been able to transform the obstacles and adversities they have faced over the millennia into a unique set of psychological strengths—strengths that are particularly well suited to succeeding in today's world.  In THE POWER OF WOMEN: Harness Your Unique Strengths at Home, at Work, and in Your Community (Times Books/an imprint of Henry Holt and Company; $25.00; on sale: January 5, 2010), Nolen-Hoeksema teaches women how to discover and then learn to fully utilize their exceptional psychological strengths in problem solving and in leading, motivating, and relating to others. Drawing on original research and the instructive stories of remarkable women, Nolen-Hoeksema identifies the skill sets that women, based on their biology and social roles, bring to challenges:  Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, PhD, is the author of Women Who Think Too Much and Women Conquering Depression, and is a professor of psychology at Yale University . She and her research on women's mental health have been covered on the Today show and in The New York Times, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. She lives in Connecticut .

Anne E. Kornblut  White House Reporter - Washington Post
She has been a political reporter in Washington since 1998 - covering, from start to finish, the three most recent presidential campaigns. She worked for the Boston Globe and the New York Times before joining the Washington Post in 2007 where she is currently a White House reporter. Was 2008 the "Year of the Woman"? It appeared to be, with a woman mounting the most serious campaign for the presidency in history and the Republican Party putting a woman on their presidential ticket for the first time. Currently women occupy the positions of Speaker of the House, Secretary of State, Homeland Security director, and Supreme Court judge. It seems as though the "gender gap" in politics has closed. Or has it? Esteemed journalist and WASHINGTON POST White House correspondent Anne Kornblut argues that America is surprisingly not quite ready for a woman president. In her first book, "NOTES FROM THE CRACKED CEILING: HILLARY CLINTON, SARAH PALIN, AND WHAT IT WILL TAKE FOR A WOMAN TO WIN" (Crown; December 29, 2009), Kornblut disputes the conventional wisdom about how women run for political office. Kornblut conducted exclusive, in-depth interviews with the most prominent women in politics today, including former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano, former president and CEO of eBay Meg Whitman, Senator Claire McCaskill and many others. Kornblut asks tough questions, provides valuable insight and indisputable facts, and even offers some hope that women can prevail if certain things change. A blunt, honest look at the role of women in politics today and what needs to be done in order for them to break through that cracked ceiling. Kornblut followed Hillary Clinton starting in the spring of 2006, when she was running for re-election to the Senate, until she resigned from the presidential candidacy race in June 2008. Kornblut then covered the Obama campaign and also spent several weeks during the general election on the road with Sarah Palin. What she found were old stereotypes revived, a divided women's movement, and a setback on equality in the political sphere.
