3/25 - The Male Brain, Pain Management, H&R Block, Seth Stevenson

Dr. Louann Brizendine  " The Male Brain"
Why is that men and women are so different? Well it turns out their brains are actually to blame! From the New York Times bestselling author of The Female Brain, the eagerly awaited follow-up book that demystifies the male brain! An article about Dr. Louann Brizendine and her research in her first book The Female Brain in a July 2006 issue of Newsweek started a media frenzy. Now, Brizendine, founder of the country's first clinic to study gender differences in brain, behavior, and hormones, turns her attention to the male brain, showing how the "male reality" is fundamentally different from the female's in every phase of life, from babyhood to old age. In THE MALE BRAIN: A Breakthrough Understanding of How Men and Boys Think  - The male brain is a lean, mean, problem-solving machine. Faced with a personal problem, a man will use his analytical brain structures, not his emotional ones, to find a solution. o The male brain thrives under competition, instinctively plays rough, and is obsessed with rank and hierarchy. o The male brain has an area for sexual pursuit 2.5 times larger than the female brains, consuming him with sexual fantasies about female body parts.

Dr. Robert Bonakdar, MD - American Academy of Pain Management
What Do Yoga, Acupuncture, and Massage Have in Common? They Can All Help Relieve Chronic Pain
Robert Bonakdar, MD, of the American Academy of Pain Management Explains How to Use an Integrative Approach to Manage Chronic Pain. Many people who take medications for chronic pain sometimes wonder, ‘Is there more that I could be doing to better manage my condition?’ Increasingly, research is showing that the answer is yes. While medication is a common and useful way to treat chronic pain, it can often be enhanced by using an integrative approach to care that combines traditional Western medicine with complementary and alternative therapies.  Integrative care can include a variety of methods such as yoga, acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, biofeedback, tai chi and meditation. Many experts agree that integrative care must be individualized – not every treatment will be effective for everyone. Each patient requires a plan tailored to his or her needs.

 Live Monday-Friday (7-8 AM PT) CRN1
Ellen Rakieten and Anne Coyle   "UNDATEABLE"
Did your date show up wearing socks with sandals? Are tighty-whities a deal-breaker for you? Do fanny packs make you want to run for the door? Now, for the very first time, we’re revealing the secret list of things that so many perfectly eligible guys manage to wear, say, or do to make themselves completely undateable. With an essential rating system that ranges from minor red-flag offenses all the way to the irreversible kiss of death, this hilarious handbook exposes the many common mistakes that can turn an otherwise acceptable man from a “maybe” into a “no way.” From pleated shorts and soul patches to ordering girly drinks and owning more than one cat, the evidence is painfully funny to behold. No more double denim, corporate swag, or exclaiming “Booya!” No more jogging in place at stoplights, and definitely no more “going dutch” on the first date. This book is for every woman who’s ever wondered where to draw the line, and every guy who’s ever asked, “What did I do wrong?”  Ellen Rakieten is currently President of Ellen Rakieten Entertainment. For over twenty- three years, she was a key force in creating, developing, writing, and producing The Oprah Winfrey Show, helping to make it one of the most successful television shows in history. She has also launched and promoted hundreds of bestselling products, books, movies, and careers. Her razorsharp instincts on “what sells” make her one of the most highly acclaimed and sought- after executive producers in the entertainment industry. Ellen recently partnered with Jerry Seinfeld to create The Marriage Ref for NBC.

Randy Serraglio  - "Endangered Species Condoms"

Through a network of more than 5,000 volunteers, the Center for Biological Diversity is distributing 100,000 free Endangered Species Condoms in all 50 states to highlight how unsustainable human population growth is driving species extinct at a cataclysmic rate.  At 6.8 billion people, the human race is not only the most populous large mammal on Earth but the most populous large mammal that has ever existed. Providing for the needs and wants of this many people — especially those in high-consumption, first-world nations — has pushed homo sapiens to absorb 50 percent of the planet’s freshwater and develop 50 percent of its landmass. As a result, other species are running out of places to live.  To help people understand the impact of overpopulation on other species, and to give them a chance to take action in their own lives, the Center is distributing free packets of Endangered Species Condoms depicting six separate species: the polar bear, snail darter, spotted owl, American burying beetle, jaguar, and coquí guajón rock frog.

Peter Krause - NBC's  "Parenthood"

"Parenthood" is a one-hour drama inspired by the box-office hit of the same name. This re-imagined and updated Universal Media Studios/Imagine Television production introduces audiences to the very large, very colorful and imperfect Braverman family.   Peter Krause portrays Adam Braverman on NBC's new drama series "Parenthood." Adam is the first-born Braverman and, in many ways, the glue that holds this large and colorful family together. An executive for a sneaker and apparel company, Adam is constantly overburdened at work, but his greatest challenge will always be at home as he and wife, Kristina (Monica Potter), struggle to raise their son, an eight-year-old with Asperger's syndrome, and Haddie, their independent teenage daughter. A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Krause is best known for his work on HBO's acclaimed drama "Six Feet Under," starring as Nate Fisher. Krause began to act in high school, and although he started college as a pre-med student at Gustavus Aldophus College in St. Peter, Minn., he graduated with a B.A. in English literature. He then decided to pursue acting and received an M.F.A. from New York University, where he starred in productions of "Macbeth," "Uncle Vanya" and "Arms and the Man." Two months after graduation, Krause made his television debut as a regular on Carol Burnett's hit variety show, "Carol and Company," followed by a stint on the hit series "Cybill." He first gained attention for his role as Casey McCall on the critically acclaimed "Sports Night." Krause has been nominated for three Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and two SAG Awards for his performance on "Six Feet Under." He has also received two SAG Awards as part of the "Six Feet Under" ensemble.  In 2004 he made his Broadway debut starring in Arthur Miller's "After the Fall" for director Michael Mayer. He then starred opposite Naomi Watts and Mark Ruffalo in "We Don't Live Here Anymore." Krause was last seen starring in the ABC series "Dirty Sexy Money," the Syfy miniseries "The Lost Room," and the independent feature "Civic Duty." Krause currently resides in Los Angeles.

"What's Cookin' Today" with Erik and Jack
 Live Monday-Friday (7-8 AM PT) CRN1

Georgia State Rep. Sharon Cooper -  Taxpayers’ Tea Party Activist
Georgia State Representative Sharon Cooper says it has never been more urgent that voters stand up, take an interest in the process of how ideas become law, and make their voices be heard. "Americans need to pay attention to what is happening in their government, to let their elected officials know how they feel about it and to hold them accountable for their actions," said Cooper, author of The Taxpayers' Tea Party: a Manual on How to Take Back Your Government. Our founding fathers wrote the ‘establishment clause’ of the First Amendment to the Constitution to ensure all Americans the right to speak their minds to the government. Far too often, we’ve ignored that right because it was too much trouble, or we just didn’t care that much about what was going on in Washington. Now is the time to take an interest and make your feelings known.

Tommy James  - "Me, the Mob  and the Music"
The music of Tommy James is played continuously, everyday, in every country in the world, and has been for more than a generation. His songs are so ingrained in modern culture, it's difficult to go for more than a day or so without hearing one of them on the radio, TV, or a film soundtrack. To date, Tommy's sold over 100 million records and has been awarded 23 gold singles, and nine gold and platinum albums. He was born Thomas Jackson on April 29, 1947 in Dayton, Ohio, his family finally settled in Niles, Michigan, which he still regards as his hometown, where he made his first stage appearance as a child model at age four. In 1959, at the age of 12, he formed his first rock band, "The Tornadoes", and began playing local gigs around the area, developing a sizeable following along the way. In 1964 a local DJ asked Tommy and the group to sign with his new regional label, "Snap Records". Among the four sides they recorded was an obscure song written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich called "HANKY PANKY". The group changed their name to "The Shondells" and released it as a single. It was an instant local hit but didn't break nationally and was soon forgotten. Tommy then added producers Bo Gentry and Ritchie Cordell to the team who, over the next two years, produced seven more back-to-back gold singles: I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW, MIRAGE, I LIKE THE WAY, GETTIN' TOGETHER, OUT OF THE BLUE, GET OUT NOW, and the party rock rave-up, MONY MONY. In 1968, Tommy James and The Shondells became one of the first acts to experiment with Music Videos of their hits, creating a mini-film around "Mony Mony," thirteen years before MTV hit the airwaves. After spending three months on the road with Vice President Hubert Humphrey's Presidential campaign, TJ and company took over the creative reins of their career by writing and producing their next record, the groundbreaking CRIMSON AND CLOVER album. Released in early 1969, it went multi-platinum, and spawned three more monster hits for the group: DO SOMETHING TO ME, CRIMSON AND CLOVER, and CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION. A fourth song on the LP, SUGAR ON SUNDAY, rose high on the charts in a cover version by The Clique. Tommy did so as a solo act, writing and producing the million selling single TIGHTER, TIGHTER for the group Alive 'N Kickin". Over the next four years Tommy scored an additional twelve chart singles including: COME TO ME, BALL AND CHAIN, I'M COMIN' HOME and DRAGGIN' THE LINE.

Grace Schireson, PhD - "Zen Women"
While there have been a few other books on this topic, and while you can read the stories of these women on the Zen Women blog, this book is the first to examine the human beings behind mythology and stereotype. In so doing, Grace Schireson offers a view of a more balanced view of our shared tradition. Grace Schireson is a dharma heir of Sojun Mel Weitsman and the Suzuki Roshi lineage of Soto Zen. She has also been empowered to teach koans by Keido Fukushima Roshi, abbot of Tofukuji in Kyoto. Grandmothers shower young children with kind words, candy, and unwavering love. Ch’an masters frequently refer to “grandmotherly kindness” and sometimes describe the “compassion of a grandmother’s heart.” Those who live near a grandmother in a three-house hamlet may feel especially fortunate as a result of the many blessings the granny bestows upon them.

Anoop Desai - "American Idol Finalist"
Anoop Desai (born December 20, 1986) is an American singer who was a contestant on the eighth season of American Idol, placing 6th. Desai has credited his decision to audition for American Idol to the death of a friend, Eve Carson, who was murdered. During the broadcast of the wild card round on March 5, 2009, he gave a "shout out" to his alma mater and mentioned Eve, as it was the first anniversary of her death. Desai is the second Indian American to advance to the final stages of the popular reality show, the first being Season 6's Sanjaya Malakar. On December 31, 2009, he announced that he will be releasing his first single in March 23rd 2010, and an album/EP release in May 4th 2010. On January 22, 2010, he announced that his first single, titled "My Name," is co-written by Brandon Rogers and Desai, and will be released in March 2010.

Ed Achorn - ""Fifty-Nine in '84"
Fifty-Nine in '84: Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball, and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had
In his first book, Achorn, an editor at the Providence Journal, takes an in-depth look into the game of baseball when it was still in its infancy, especially the hard-nosed players rarely seen in today's incarnation of the national pastime, including one of the greatest pitchers that most of today's fans know nothing about. In the 1884 season, pitching for Providence, R.I., Radbourn—the son of English immigrants—endured one of the most grueling summers imaginable in willing his team to the pennant. The stress on his right arm, which caused such deterioration that he couldn't comb his own hair, also gave him a baseball record of 59 wins that will never be broken, in a year of unparalleled brilliance. Achorn wonderfully captures this era of the sport—when pitchers threw balls at batters' heads, and catchers, playing barehanded, endured such abuse that some would need fingers amputated. It's no wonder that, in some circles, as Achorn writes, baseball was thought to be one degree above grand larceny, arson, and mayhem, and those who engaged in it were beneath the notice of decent society. From the early stars of the game to archaic rules that seem silly by today's standards, there's plenty to devour (and learn) for even the biggest of baseball savants.

Julio Morataya  "March Madness"
The NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship is a single elimination tournament held each spring in the United States, featuring 65 college basketball teams, both conference champions and at-large selections. The tournament, organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), was created in 1939 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was the brainchild of Kansas coach Phog Allen[1][2] Held mostly in March, it is informally known as March Madness or the Big Dance; the national semifinals (the Final Four) have become one of the nation's most prominent sporting events.  Since its inception, the tournament bracket has included conference tournament champions from each Division I conference, which receive automatic bids. The remaining slots are at-large berths, with teams chosen by an NCAA selection committee. The selection process and tournament seedings are based on several factors, including team rankings, win-loss records and RPI data. The two lowest-seeded teams compete in the "opening round game" to determine which will join the other 63 teams in the first round of the tournament.  A Most Outstanding Player award is given by the Associated Press at the end of each tournament. At 11 national titles, UCLA holds the record for the most NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championships. The University of Kentucky is second, with 7 national titles, while Indiana University and the University of North Carolina are tied for third with 5 national titles. The tournament is televised on CBS in the United States, except for the opening round.

Wednesday March 17, 2010
"What's Cookin' Today" with Erik and Jack
 Live Monday-Friday (7-8 AM PT) CRN1

Chris Campion -  "Escape From Bellvue"
Christopher John Campion is the lead singer of the indie rock band Knockout Drops and is the creator, playwright, and star of the hit off-Broadway rock musical Escape from Bellevue. Indie rock raconteur Chris Campion—one of the few patients ever to escape from Bellevue’s locked ward—recalls his band’s tumultuous ride, his plummet into addiction, and the strange road back to sobriety. Chronicling more than twenty years in the life of a Long Island kid who became a hardcore fixture of Manhattan’s indie rock scene, Escape from Bellevue is a coming-of-age tale like no other. As the lead singer of New York–based indie rock band Knockout Drops, Campion got a taste of fame (but, alas, no fortune) on a wild ride that lasted from the early 1980s through the 1990s. The author is #5 out of 6 children in a big, loud, boisterous Irish-Catholic clan. He and his book are getting big buzz now in Irish press like New York City's Irish Echo and Irish Voice (which called him "one of the funniest men alive.")

Marshall Vian Summers -  "The Great Waves of Change"
Marshall Vian Summers is the award-winning author of Steps to Knowledge: The Book of Inner Knowing (Year 2000 Book of the Year Award for Spirituality in the United States) and Greater Community Spirituality: A New Revelation. His message emphasizes that humanity is a greater community that must establish a new unity and cooperation in the face of great change if it is to survive and advance in the times ahead. His message presents a new vision of humanity s future in a larger Universe of Intelligent Life and an urgent call to prepare individually and collectively for the Great Waves of change; a converging set of challenges which include economic hardship and instability, catastrophic climate change, resource depletion and escalating conflict around the world. His writings contain a spiritual preparation which focuses on the deeper intelligence within each person called Knowledge; which each of us will need in order to navigate the difficult and uncertain times to come. As nations, cultures and religions clash and become more unstable, men and women everywhere will need this deeper authority to determine their actions, to assist one another and ultimately to forge a new way for the human race.

"What's Cookin' Today" with Erik &Jack
 Live Monday-Friday (7-8 AM PT) CRN1

Florina – Staten Island, NY  - "Bad Girls Club"
With her tough talking, “born to be bad” style, this bisexual party girl refuses to be the Albanian Muslim ideal of a passive, obedient female her family would hope for. Florina always encourages women to stand up for themselves and is prepared to fight for the underdog at the drop of a hat.  "Bad Girls Club" - Part 1 of Reunion Special hosted by Perez Hilton airs 3/16 at 10PM ET/PT on Oxygen .  Season four brings seven new self-proclaimed “bad girls” together in a beautiful mansion in Los Angeles. These women recognize that their outrageous behavior has hindered their relationships, careers and lives. They have issues with anger, trust and control. In a house full of women with similarly explosive personalities, clashes erupt between roommates and housemates over everything from who’s on cleaning duty to where they should go out at night. Will these bad girls, faced with the mirrored image of their own behavior, learn to moderate and control their bad girl energy or will they spin out of control and flee this opportunity for change?

William Peter Blatty - "Dimiter "

The novel The Exorcist, written in (1971), is his magnum opus; he also penned the subsequent screenplay version of the film, for which he won an Academy Award.  William Peter Blatty has thrilled generations of readers with his iconic mega-bestseller The Exorcist. Now Blatty gives us DIMITER. DIMITER opens in the world’s most oppressive and isolated totalitarian state: 1970s Albania , an officially atheistic state. A prisoner suspected of being an enemy agent is held by state security. He maintains an eerie silence even while being subjected to unimaginable torture—before killing four guards in his escape, en route to fulfill a mysterious mission…the prisoner is Dimiter, the American “agent from Hell.”

Troy Dunn  "The Locator" (WeTV)
For over 20-years Troy Dunn has made it his purpose to reunite “half the world with the other half.” He grants wishes to people who want to reconnect with loved ones. In his fourth season of the WeTV hit series, The Locator, Troy has all-new compelling stories of people searching for a part of their life that is missing. Each episode profiles a new case, selected from thousands hoping to find a missing link to their life. Each family member wants answers to questions that have haunted them for years. Troy knows from personal experience that exploring the “why” is just as important as finding the “who.” The series will tug at your heart and help you understand the importance of family. Troy has located over 40,000 “unfind-able” men, women and children through his business, created in 1990, after he was inspired by searching for his mother’s biological parents. THE LOCATOR cases are adoptee's seeking their biological parents, siblings separated at birth, unique situations where people have been separated from loved ones by a divorce, a move, a tragedy and other life circumstances.

 Live Monday-Friday (7-8 AM PT) CRN1

John Rendall - "Lion Called Christian"
In 2008 an extraordinary two-minute film clip appeared on YouTube and immediately became an international phenomenon. It captures the moving reunion of two young men and their pet lion Christian, after they had left him in Africa with Born Free’s George Adamson to introduce him into his rightful home in the wild.  A Lion Called Christian tells the remarkable story of how Anthony “Ace” Bourke and John Rendall, visitors to London from Australia in 1969, bought the boisterous lion cub in the pet department of Harrods. For several months, the three of them shared a flat above a furniture shop on London’s King’s Road, where the charismatic and intelligent Christian quickly became a local celebrity, cruising the streets in the back of a Bentley, popping in for lunch at a local restaurant, even posing for a fashion advertisement. But the lion cub was growing up--fast--and soon even the walled church garden where he went for exercise wasn’t large enough for him. How could Ace and John avoid having to send Christian to a zoo for the rest of his life? A coincidental meeting with English actors Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, stars of the hit film Born Free, led to Christian being flown to Kenya and placed under the expert care of “the father of lions” George Adamson. Incredibly, when Ace and John returned to Kenya to see Christian a year later, they received a loving welcome from their lion, who was by then fully integrated into Africa and a life with other lions.

Joe Mantegna added, “Just like Justin Timberlake brought ‘Sexy Back’ Deana Martin brought ‘Coolness Back.” “Deana has such a wonderful voice and is a perfect fit for the standards. Her music puts a smile on your face and makes you feel good! Her Dad would be very proud,” said Ed Lauter.

Produced in collaboration with Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc., the Newseum exhibit includes a number of rare objects from the Graceland vaults that have never before been publicly displayed. See private telegrams, letters and scrapbooks that chronicle Presley’s rise as a music and media sensation, as well as his death and his enduring legacy.

Noel Paul Stookey - "Peter Paul & Mary"
The trio of Peter, Paul and Mary were launched during an unusually creative period in popular music. Peter Yarrow, who had come to Greenwich Village with a psychology degree from Cornell, recalls that, "The Village in the early 1960s was a crucible of creativity. Involvement in music was a matter of joyous discovery, not a business. We knew that Folk music was having an enormous impact in the Village, but was a couple of years away from being embraced on a national scale."  At the same time, the Village was a starting place for Noel Paul Stookey, a fledgling stand-up comic from Michigan State University. He met up with Peter and independently, Mary Travers, who was already known for her work in the "Song Swappers", a Folk group that had recorded with Peter Seeger. Having grown up in the Village, the flaxen-haired singer was a familiar figure at the Washington Square Sunday singing event. The three decided to work together, encouraged by the Folk impresario, Albert Grossman, who became their manager. After rehearsing for seven months in Travers' three flight walk-up apartment, Peter, Paul and Mary premiered at the Bitter End in 1961, and then played at other seminal Folk clubs like the Chicago "Gate of Horn" and San Francisco's "Hungry I". Following their appearance at the famed "Blue Angel" nightclub in New York, they embarked on a rigorous touring schedule that lasted nearly ten straight years.  1962 marked the trio's debut on Warner Brothers Records with "Peter, Paul and Mary" which brought Folk music to the vast American public and to the top of the charts. As Billboard Magazine noted, "It became an instant classic. The album was in the Top 10 for ten months, remained in the Top 20 for two years, and did not drop off the Hot 100 album chart until three-and-a-half years after its release." The trio's version of "If I Had A Hammer" was not only a popular single from this LP, it was also embraced as an anthem of the civil rights movement. This success marked the beginning of an incredibly influential time for Peter, Paul and Mary, and for the contemporary urban Folk tradition which they personified. In the third week of November 1963, they had 3 albums on the Billboard Top 6. Also in '63, their recording of "Puff, The Magic Dragon" written by Peter Yarrow and Leonard Lipton won the hearts of millions, while their recording of "Blowin' In The Wind" helped introduce a fellow Village songwriter named Bob Dylan. It was Folk music that was to spark the imagination and the passion of a generation intent on social change. The song, "Puff, The Magic Dragon" was actually the center of controversy when it was first released. At the time, the drug culture was making headlines and some radio stations mis-took the lyrics and refused to play the song. Years later, Paul Stookie laughed as he explained that the song is the story of a little boy growing up and had nothing at all to do with marijuana.
