Jay "Bird" Dobyns - "NO ANGEL: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels"
Dobyns became an agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) in 1987; after only ten days on the job he was taken hostage and shot through the chest. This experience of cheating death left Dobyns with a feeling of invincibility, and over the nextfourteen years he gladly and willfully immersed himself in numerous undercover roles. But by 2001 he still felt as though he had something to prove. It was at this time that was named the lead undercover agent in an ambitious ATF investigation of the Arizona Hells Angels, code-named Operation Black Biscuit. In NO ANGEL: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels (paperback reprint on sale February 2), Dobyns offers his action-packed first-person account of that twenty-one-month investigation. Operation Black Biscuit required Dobyns to leave his family behind and transform himself into a menacing, gun-dealing, shaved-head, inked-out, goateed "debt collection specialist" who rode a Harley everywhere and always carried his twin Glock 19s for all to see. For Dobyns and his fellow agents, the mission was to form their own biker gang and gain so much respect from the Arizona Hells Angels that they would willingly take the operatives under their ominous, conspiratorial wings. But as the case progressed, Jay's personal goal morphed into an obsession: More than respect, he wanted to garner the Angels' admiration and even fear. Ultimately, and at any cost, Jay felt as though he had to become the first government operative to gain "full-patch" status in the infamous Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. NO ANGEL paints a vivid picture of the biker world that quickly consumed Dobyns. He spent his days and nights surrounded by violent felons, knowing that the slightest mistake could cost him and his team their lives. At runs and clubhouses, between rides and riots, Bird befriended badass bikers, meth-fueled "old ladies," gun fetishists, psycho-killer ex-cons, and even some of the elite Hells Angels who've committed extreme violence on behalf of their club.

Goewey believes, "Rewiring your brain can have you experience less stress and generate creative brilliance." Goewey launches his Stress Eraser Contest January 2010 and anyone experiencing stress can enter at http://www.MysticCool.com. The winner receives the same six free stress eraser sessions Outside Magazine featured from Don Goewey in January 2010's issue. To enter, answer the question by midnight March 31st, 2010: 'Who would I be if I could transcend stress for good?' The winner will be announced April 1, 2010 (because you'd be a fool not to enter and eliminate stress for good from your life). Goewey is featured in this month's Outside Magazine, where a journalist was commissioned to undergo six coaching sessions with him and report on the results. "Three weeks into my effort," the journalist reports in the article, "I'd become … much better at maintaining a calm, pragmatic mind-set. In my new calmer state, I'm much more productive." The journalist describes how, in particular, Goewey's "clear button" technique gave her a stress off switch. "The chief factor blocking the brain's capacity to generate brilliance is stress. A dynamically peaceful attitude lights up neural networks that generate a fearless intelligence, making us immune to stress. The result is the joy of creative action in which we not only excel, but excel in ways that make work and life intrinsically rewarding. Who wouldn't want a brain like that? It's achievable and in a relatively short period of time," Goewey says. Mystic Cool combines the latest research in neuroscience and psychology with practical spiritual insights. The book represents more than just "stress reduction." It is a stress solution that unlocks the brain power needed to excel in ways that make work rewarding and family life fulfilling.

"THE BLACK-WHITE ACHIEVEMENT GAP: Why Closing It Is the Greatest Civil Rights Issue of Our Time" -- By Former Secretary of Education, Rod Paige After African Americans have overcome so many obstacles, inequality in the education system remains. Black students trail their white peers on academic tests, experience high dropout rates and low college completion rates, and tend to shy away from majors in hard sciences and mathematics. These students fall behind early on in school and fall farther behind as each year passes?the achievement gap growing at every grade level. As former U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige, PED, and Elaine Witty, Ed.D., put forth in their new book, this gap is the primary barrier to racial equality and social justice in our time. "THE BLACK-WHITE ACHIEVEMENT GAP: Why Closing It Is the Greatest Civil Rights Issue of Our Time" is a call to action for civil rights leaders, educators, and all Americans to confront this crisis in our classrooms. The causes of this gap are not the common explanations socioeconomic disparities, pathological culture, genetics, or black identity?but educational deprivation. These children are not learning effectively?lacking fundamentals, high expectations, and great teaching as well as the support and commitment from home, school, and community.
Stephen Mitchell "The Second Book of the Tao"
The most widely translated book in world literature after the Bible, Tao Te Ching, or Book of the Way, is the classic manual on the art of living. Following the phenomenal success of his own version of the Tao Te Ching, renowned scholar and translator Stephen Mitchell has composed the innovative THE SECOND BOOK OF THE TAO from two Chinese anthologies: the work of Lao-tzu’s disciple Chuang-tzu and Confucius’s grandson Tzussu, The Second Book of the Tao offers Western readers a path into reality that has nothing to do with Taoism or Buddhism or old or new alone, but everything to do with truth. Mitchell has selected the freshest, clearest teachings from these two great students of the Tao and adapted them into versions that reveal the poetry, depth, and humor of the original texts with a thrilling new power. Alongside each adaptation, Mitchell includes his own commentary, at once explicating and complementing the text. “The first book of the Tao (written by the perhaps legendary Lao-tzu) is the Tao Te Ching, that marvel of lucidity and grace, the classic manual on the art of living. What I wanted to create here was a left to its right, a yang to its yin, a companion volume and anti-manual. The Chuang-tzu had the perfect material for that: deep, subtle, with an audacity that can make your hair stand on end. If Lao-tzu is a smile, Chuang-tzu is a belly-laugh. the clown of the Absolute, the apotheosis of incredulity, Coyote among the bodhisattvas. And the Chung Yung provided a psychological and moral acuity of comparable depth The Second Book of the Tao is a twenty-first-century form of ancient wisdom, bringing a new, homemade sequel to the Tao Te Ching into the modern world. renditions are radiantly lucid; they dig out the vision that’s hiding beneath the words; they grab the text by the scruff of the neckâ€"by its heart, reallyâ€"and let its essential meanings fall out. The book introduces us to a cast of vivid characters, most of them humble artisans or servants, who show us what it means to be in harmony with the way things are. Its wisdom provides a psychological and moral acuity as deep as the Tao Te Ching itself. The Second Book of the Tao is a gift to contemporary readers, granting us access to our own fundamental wisdom. meditations and risky reimagining of the original texts are brilliant and liberating, not least because they keep catching us off-guard, opening up the heavens where before we saw a roof. He makes the ancient teachings at once modern, relevant, and timeless. Stephen Mitchell was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1943, educated at Amherst, the Sorbonne, and Yale, and de-educated through intensive Zen practice. His many books include the bestselling Tao Te Ching, The Gospel According to Jesus, Bhagavad Gita, The Book of Job, Meetings with the Archangel, and Gilgamesh.
