Doctor Michael Ramsay "The July Effect"
New research shows that the “July effect” is real. There really is a greater chance of dying in the hospital during the month of July. That’s the word from researchers at UC San Diego. The scary statistics keep adding up. Thousands of people already in the hospital die of preventable problems.
The 2010 Patient Safety in American Hospitals study [published by HealthGrades] says more than 99-thousand patient deaths in U.S. hospitals could have been prevented. A new study by the University of California at San Diego [published in the latest edition of the Journal of General Internal Medicine] is now calling attention to the spike in fatal hospital errors during the month of July [known as the “July Effect”]. Our Guest is Dr. Michael Ramsay, anesthesiologist and respected expert in the fields of blood and pain management. He will discuss how new medical advancements and technologies are making lifesaving differences at hospitals across America. Each day, over 40,000 patient safety incidents occur at U.S. hospitals—costing $8.9B in excess healthcare costs. *Even a single incident increases the risk of death to 1 in 10. Deaths due to preventable errors spike during the month of July as new medical school graduates begin their residencies. Some hospitals are using new noninvasive, wireless medical technologies as a ‘safety net’ to directly prevent these deaths and injuries. Find out about these patient ‘safety nets’ and how they can protect you/your loved one.

6/28 - Nelson George, Andy Kindler, Saul Rubinstein;
http://crntalk.com/podcast/wcej/2010/wcej-06-24-2010.mp3Nelson George - ‘Thriller: The Musical Life of Michael Jackson’
Nelson George is an author, filmmaker, television producer, and critic with a long career in analyzing and presenting the diverse elements of African-American culture. Queen Latifah won the Golden Globe for playing the lead in his directorial debut, the HBO movie 'Life Support'. In a new book, Jackson’s chart-topping days are under examination. Journalistic decorum demands that when someone in the public eye dies, an obituary should accentuate the positive, or at least the neutral, aspects of the person’s life while acknowledging the unsavory details in a perfunctory way, if not glossing over them entirely. This rule was tougher to follow after Michael Jackson died. Despite a superlative body of work, Jackson’s often eccentric behavior and tawdry scandals loomed larger than his art in his later years, to the point that it’s now seemingly inextricable from the plastic surgery and “Wacko Jacko” headlines. Cultural critic Nelson George tries to thread the needle with his new book, Thriller: The Musical Life of Michael Jackson, an analysis of Jackson’s discography in which the art and the artist have been forcibly separated. Nelson George is the award-winning author of a dozen books, including his memoir, City Kid, and the classic Hip-Hop America. He is also a two-time recipient of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award. George was born in Brooklyn, where he still lives.
Andy Kindler - "Last Comic Standing" Judge
Andy Kindler is known in comedy circles as a troublemaker. Originally from New York, and now complaining from California, he annoys people all over the world. Kindler is a frequent guest and correspondent for "The Late Show with David Letterman." Each summer at the "Just for Laughs" festival in Montreal he delivers the "State of the Industry" address to a packed ballroom filled with comics and Hollywood industry types. He is infamous for his scathing attacks on the world of entertainment, including the previously taboo practice of making fun of his fellow comedians. Just as the comedy boom of the '90s was imploding, Kindler wrote the "Hack's Handbook" for National Lampoon. This how-to guide satirized and exposed tired comedy formulas. Kindler can soon be seen in his second Comedy Central half-hour special. He currently recurs on "Wizards of Waverly Place" and the upcoming animation, "Bob's Burgers." He was also recently a regular comedy litigator on "The Root of all Evil." Other noteworthy credits include the "HBO Young Comedians Special," "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "The Daily Show," "Dr. Katz Professional Therapist," "Home Movies" and "The Larry Sanders Show." Kindler is often recognized for playing the life-affirming character Andy on "Everybody Loves Raymond."

Dr. Scott Baldrige, PhD "Singapore Math"
As schools across America face budget cuts while our students continue to test below many other countries internationally, especially in math, educators are turning their attention to a math program from the country of Singapore as a solution. Dr. Scott Baldrige, PhD, a co-author of the leading US text book for elementary school math teacher-training and expert on Singapore Math is available to speak about the significance of this curriculum and what it means for American students. “Singapore Math”, as the curriculum is dubbed, has consistently ranked first in the world in mathematics on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study while U.S. students ranked 16th out of 46 participating nations. Some of the major differences with the Singapore Math approach are that it involves a unique pictorial approach to math allowing students to look at problems in a visual way, before moving into abstract, and it focuses on a limited number of topics each year, allowing students to master a concept before building on it. The result is that Singapore Math has spread to a sampling of schools and districts in all 50 states, and has even been approved for use statewide in California, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Oregon and adopted in some 40 countries.

6/22 - GK Reid, Suzanne McGee, Mary McCormack,
GK REID (Bravo's "Double Exposure")
Bravo goes behind the lens of celebrity photography duo Markus Klinko and Indrani in the new docu-series " Double Exposure, " premiering Tuesday, June 15 at 10PM ET/PT. The series follows Markus and Indrani, a former couple, along with high-end stylist GK Reid, giving viewers a taste of the world of high fashion and celebrity photography. Visionary fashion stylist GK Reid has established himself as one of the industry 's most influential cutting-edge innovators. Trusted by numerous high profile celebrities for their most important projects, his editorial and advertising campaigns are world-renowned. Reid is responsible for some of the hottest and most notable celebrity transformations including styling Mariah Carey for her best-selling album "The Emancipation of Mimi, " Rihanna 's album covers for " Good Girl Gone Bad, " as well as styling Jennifer Lopez, David Bowie, Puff Daddy, Beyonce, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. He has worked on numerous influential ad campaigns including L'Oréal, Pepsi, LVMH De Beers, and Hugo Boss, and his editorial work has appeared in high profile magazine such as V, Harpers Bazaar, GQ and Rolling Stone.
Suzanne McGee "Chasing Goldman Sachs"
SUZANNE McGEE, is a contributing editor at Barron’s. She has written about the financial markets for the New York Post, Institutional Investor, Portfolio.com, and the Financial Times and is a Loeb Award winner for a multimedia series on consumer culture in China. Earlier in her career she was a staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal. Wall Street is as important to the economy and the overall functioning of our society as our electric and water utilities. But it doesn’t act that way. The financial system has been saved from destruction but as long as the mind-set of “chasing Goldman Sachs” lingers, it will not have been reformed. As banking undergoes its biggest transformation since the 1929 crash and the Great Depression, McGee shows where it stands today and points to where it needs to go next, examining the future of those financial institutions supposedly “too big to fail.”
Fabulous Beekman Boys
Can a fabby gay couple from the city become fabby biodynamic farmers? Apparently yes, at least in a new Planet Green show dubbed The Fabulous Beekman Boys. Those boys are Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, two out and proud urban men who decide to try homesteading at an upstate New York farm, a.k.a. Beekman 1802. “Who says gays can’t raise kids?” say the couple — while bottle-feeding a baby goat! The Fabulous Beekman Boys doesn’t begin airing until June, but I got to see a few clips at the Television Critics Association Cable Tour Panel earlier today. What I learned: Urbanites look funny when they try to farm. We see Josh and Brent buy a pair of cute piglets — that nimbly escape and tear across the farm, with the would-be farmers chasing after them in wide-eyed panic.
MARY McCORMACK (Mary Shannon on USA's "IN PLAIN SIGHT")
Mary McCormack is Mary Shannon in the third season of the hit USA Network original series IN PLAIN SIGHT, Wednesday's at 10/9c. One of today's boldest and most versatile actresses, McCormack continues to challenge herself with roles that often defy Hollywood standards and bring to light the complex lives of ordinary women. She has shown her immense talent working in film, television, and on stage, and has tackled roles ranging from slapstick comedy to intense drama. McCormack' s breakout performance, opposite Howard Stern in "Private Parts, " won her universal critical acclaim. She followed that film with a highly successful run opposite Alan Cumming as Sally Bowles in the Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall-directed

Carole Carson - "From Fat to Fit"
Carole Carson, is the author of "From Fat to Fit: Turn Yourself Into A Weapon of Mass Destruction." Carole has inspired people in her community of Grass Valley, California to lose four tons of weight together. Now she's doing the same for AARP members with the "Fat to Fit Online Challenge." On November 11, 2007, I took one of the biggest steps--or should I say the biggest jump--of my life: flying in the SkyVenture wind tunnel in Orlando, Florida. The flying was so intense and took so much energy, I had adrenaline coursing through my body long after I touched the ground. Like many new things in life, it was scary before I jumped in. After that, it was great. I loved it! It was so much fun that my husband, Dick, tried it too--at age 72. And just to prove how much he enjoyed it, when asked if he would do it again, he enthusiastically said, "I think I'll go again at 73," to which I chimed in, "And again at 83."
Danny Teeson Judge, "Dance Your Ass Off" Monday(10 PM) on OxygenHosted by Spice Girl Mel B, " Dance Your Ass Off" features 12 talented, full-figured contestants who struggle with their weight and dance to unleash their inner " thin". "Dance Your A** Off" features talented, full-figured contestants who struggle with their weight and dance to unleash their inner thin. Last season, the contestants’ 'thinspiration" resulted in more than 500 lbs. lost. The series pairs each contestant with a professional dance partner who trains them for their weekly stage performances. Then they burn up the dance floor and the calories in front of a live studio audience and a panel of expert judges. The judges score the routines, and then the contestants weigh in to reveal their weekly weight loss. The dance score and the weight loss are combined for an overall score, which determines who is sent home each week. This season will be hosted by Spice Girl and "Dancing with the Stars" finalist Melanie Brown (aka Mel B.). Learn more about her at MelanieBrown.com. According to USA Today, Mr. Six is the creation of Doner Advertising of Southfield, Michigan. The success of the ad became such that Six Flags toured the vintage bus featured in the ad to all of its 31 parks and sold t-shirts based on the Mr. Six advertisement. Mr. Six also appeared on the nationally broadcast morning show Good Morning America. Soon after the character's introduction in television commercials, Mr. Six became an established pop-culture meme. Parodies of the commercials appeared on television shows and on video sites such as YouTube, while media outlets and blogs attempted to unmask the identity of the actor, also noting his striking resemblance to legendary Hollywood agent Irving "Swifty" Lazar and KKK member Edgar Ray Killen. The popularity of the character continued even after Six Flags officially cancelled the ad campaign. After the character's cancellation, as a prank, a dummy representing a dead Mr. Six appeared in the "Brutal Planet" haunted house at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California during Fright Fest 2006. Because of his spryness, it was speculated that he was played by a much younger actor. Blogger Paul Davidson has reported that reality star and dancer Danny Teeson, most noted for his turn on Queer Eye for the Straight Girl, played the dancing Septuagenarian

Larry landed an agent and was sent to Universal Studios to audition for an opening as a contract player. Luck was on his side. Jack Webb was casting a new series for NBC called The Chase. Larry played a young detective. After attending acting school at Sal Dano's at night and doing bit parts by day, he scored. Baa Baa Black Sheep was being produced and cast at Universal, and the now famous writer Stephen J. Cannell was the executive producer and the role was a natural for Larry. He was cast as a cocky, hot shot pilot named Bobby Boyle. The show was a big hit for NBC but was cancelled within two years. Because the network was so impressed with Larry's on-screen presence, they cast him in a new series called The Duke. Bad luck! The Duke was cancelled in one year. Larry was back to playing whatever Universal told him to. Hoping to catch lighting in a jar, along came Magnum, P.I. and the role of Rick. This was his elevator...the show became a mega-hit for 8 years. Since Magnum, P.I., Larry has done co-starring roles in 25 feature films and guest starred on many hot TV shows. Larry is the author of a book titled Aloha Magnum.

Aaron Barlow "Quentin Tarantino: Life at the Extremes"
Quentin Tarantino: Life at the Extremes explores the uses of violence in the films Tarantino has written, directed, and produced. Arguing that extreme violence is central to Tarantino's art, the book helps readers understand its purpose in his films—as metaphor, as movement, and as motivation. For Tarantino, the book explains, violence serves the purposes of film. In each of his movies, he explores the boundaries of taste and audience reaction, using violence and shock to bring questions of responsibility and expectation to the forefront of discussions on cinema. After introductory chapters placing Tarantino and his films within the broader context of American cinema, author Aaron Barlow focuses on Tarantino's six major directorial efforts. Each film is discussed from its genre starting point and the differing directions the films take are explored, as are the structural elements. In the end, readers will see how Tarantino deliberately pushes film in new directions through old techniques, styles, and even actors, crafting original art from what others have discarded.

Roxana Shirazi - The Last Living Slut - Born in Iran, Bred Backstage
The Last Living Slut is the salaciously literary and sexually liberated account of one young woman’s transition from traditionally-raised Iranian to rock and roll groupie for Guns N Roses, Motley Crew, and many others. Paired with a powerful introduction by New York Times bestselling authors Neil Strauss and Anthony Bozza, Roxana Shirazi’s The Last Living Slut is a passionate tale of jilted love, brutal revenge, and backstage encounters that make Pamela Des Barres’s I’m With The Band read like the diary of a nun. The outrageous, yet surprisingly moving, memoir of a girl who fled the Iranian Revolution—and found her salvation in the deliriously sexy life of a rock-'n'-roll groupie. Honest, provocative, and vividly written, The Last Living Slut is the memoir of Roxana Shirazi, who was raised traditionally in Tehran. After her family spirits her to the West in flight from the Iranian Revolution, Shirazi is led far astray by the sound—and the sex appeal—of rock and roll. Caught between her sexual appetites, passion for music (and musicians), and fear of being a bad seed, Shirazi bares her soul to offer a raw account of her life as an eager-to-please rock groupie. With appearances by members of Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Velvet Revolver, and many more, The Last Living Slut is a moving memoir of growing up in the political turbulence of Tehran; an unflinching portrayal of teenage cultural dislocation in London; a backstage romp that makes Pamela Des Barres's I'm with the Band read like a nun's diary; and a white-knuckled tale of jilted love and brutal revenge.

During John’s childhood, he showed great promise of psychic skills and abilities. As early as age five, his talents came to fruition when he began seeing spirits of people who had "crossed-over". To most, the very idea of seeing an apparition would seem downright frightening, but it became a regular experience in life. He also was able to pick up distinct impressions from antiques and old furniture, with regard to their history and previous owners. He could sense energetic vibrations and auras, not only around people and animals, but objects as well.

Gary Wright - Musician
Gary Wright (born Gary Malcolm Wright, April 26, 1943, Cresskill, New Jersey) is an American musician, best known for his song, "Dream Weaver. He was the piano player on Harry Nilsson's version of "Without You". Wright was born and raised in Cresskill, New Jersey, and attended Tenafly High School. A former child actor, Wright appeared in the 1954 original Broadway production of the long-running musical, Fanny (888 performances), having originated the role of Acolyte and then subsequently replacing Lloyd Reese in the role of Cesario, the son of Fanny. The title role of Fanny was originated by Florence Henderson who later gained worldwide fame as matriarch Carol Brady in the long-running TV series, The Brady Bunch. According to Henderson, Reese had to be replaced by Wright because (in her own words): "He (Reese) was a New York boy and puberty struck very early. It wasn't long till he looked like my boyfriend!" In 1959, Wright made his first recording as part of a duo along with Billy Markle (being billed as Gary & Billy) for the 20th Century Fox Records label. The songs released were "Working After School" and "Lisa". In the 1960s, Wright went to Europe to continue studying psychology. In 1967, he joined the band Spooky Tooth as singer and keyboardist. In 1970 Wright was involved as a record producer with the Liverpool based folk music band, Arrival, and was also a member of the folk rock band Howl the Good who had played, alongside Arrival, at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970. During this period, he also befriended George Harrison and was invited to contribute piano to Harrison's All Things Must Pass. After Spooky Tooth split up in 1974, Wright continued his solo career, culminating in "Dream Weaver". The single peaked at #2 for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976, sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in March 1976.[3] It was also later featured in the Wayne's World film and soundtrack, as well as in the 1996 film The People vs. Larry Flynt. Later in 1976, his follow-up single "Love is Alive" also reached #2 (for two weeks). Ronnie Montrose played guitar on the song "Power of Love" from Wright's album, The Dream Weaver. Although The Dream Weaver was a hit album and would go multi-platinum, his subsequent releases did not catch on, either critically or commercially, and his career quickly stalled. But Wright continued to make albums throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Wounded Bird Records reissued The Light of Smiles, Touch and Gone, Headin' Home and The Right Place in October 2008; all except Headin' Home featured extra tracks. Wright's last success on the Billboard Hot 100 was in 1981, when he returned with "Really Wanna Know You" (co-written by Ali Thomson). His 1981 song "Comin' Apart", from the album The Right Place, was sampled by Armand Van Helden for the 2004 club song titled "My My My". The song was remixed in 2006 by Andreas S. Jensen. "Heartbeat", also from The Right Place, was re-recorded in 2007 as a dance track by Topmodelz. In 1984 Chaka Khan included her cover version of "Love is Alive" (re-titled "My Love is Alive") on her album I Feel For You. In 1986, Wright contributed the song "Hold On to Your Vision" to the soundtrack of the Sylvester Stallone movie Cobra. "Better By You, Better Than Me," a song written by Wright for Spooky Tooth, was covered by Judas Priest on their 1978 album Stained Class. In 2008, Wright toured with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. In November 2008, Wright released the six-track EP, Waiting to Catch the Light, on the Larkio Music label. In late 2008, Wright also released The Light of a Million Suns, which featured a re-recorded version of "My Love is Alive" in which son Dorian gets a recording credit..In 2010, Wright is set to tour again with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, along with Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, Richard Page, and Gregg Bissonette. Wright released a new album in June 2010 called 'Connected'. Special guests on the record include Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter.
Gary Fong "THE ACCIDENTAL MILLIONAIRE"
Gary Fong (b. December 6, 1960 in Seattle, WA, USA) is an American entrepreneur and former photographer. Fong ended his photography career in 2002 to pursue business interests such as marketing photography products. Starting in a bedroom of his parent's apartment, Fong started shooting weddings for $150/no time limit. While this entry price severely undermined the pricing standards, he was able to sell comprehensive designs at an option that was far more costly than the basic package. He would go on to photograph such people as, Sylvester Stallone, Ronald Reagan, Sidney Sheldon, Lee Remick, Paul McCartney, Peter Criss, Bruce Lee, Todd Rundgren, Priscilla Presley, Pia Zadora, Michael Landon, Florence Henderson, Shelly Fabares, among others. Here Comes the Guide, a respected "bible" of wedding planning has said, "Every once in a while someone comes along to revolutionize an art form; for wedding photography, that someone Is Gary Fong." His photographic images have been used for national ad campaigns for Fuji, Kodak, Canon and Hasselblad. Fong was selected in the telecast, Weddings 2000 as one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world. This live simulcast was broadcast to movie theaters around the world, and was a first of its kind. Fong is also the co-founder of Pictage's Digital Photo Lab. With the advent of digital, Fong knew that online presentation of images would be best matched to an instant print delivery service. So, joining up with Pictage's online presence, Fong brought his own personal print lab into Pictage's headquarters, and installed it in the kitchen. Joining the Board of Directors and Senior Management team, Pictage started with seven employees in a small office, and within years the employee count would top 150, making Pictage the largest dedicated online digital/web solution anywhere in the United States. Apax Partners invested $29 million dollars to acquire Pictage in 2006. In 2009, Fong began focusing on a style of management called vertical integration. Because the scale of his photographic accessories company had reached a sufficient scale, Fong began acquiring companies in the Midwestern United States to produce and distribute his products. The first such acquisition was the assets of the former Mailer's Plus Corporation, a logistics warehouse operation in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. Keeping the assets, leasehold, management and staff of the previous company, Fong re-opened it as a new corporation, Consolidated Fulfillment, Inc. On January 19, 2009, Publisher's Marketplace announced the acquisition of world publication rights to, Gary Fong's THE ACCIDENTAL MILLIONAIRE: How to Succeed in Life without Really Trying, described as "a humorous, poignant memoir of the man said to have revolutionized wedding photography", to Glenn Yeffeth at BenBella Books, for publication in October 2009 (World).
