7/19-Steve Pelzer

CRN 1 Live M-Thur 7a-8a PT

Steve Pelzer
Virginia—Seven “fiercely independent” resorts, each a brand name on its own, have banded together to form Kindred Resorts & Hotels, a group whose aim is to provide a cohesive voice for independent properties like themselves and to tell the story of what these kinds of resorts represent, according to Gregory Riehle, executive VP of Saddlebrook Holdings. The Kindred slogan is: “Authentic in Spirit, Distinctive in Style.”

A Web site, www.staykindred, was launched on 21 October. For now it provides links to member Web sites and booking pages; it does not feature a booking engine.

The member resorts are: The Breakers, Palm Beach, Florida; The Carneros Inn, Napa, California; Colonial Williamsburg Resort Collection, Williamsburg, Virginia; Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan; The Lodge at Torrey Pines, La Jolla, California; Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Florida; and Saddlebrook Resort, Tampa, Florida.

“The Kindred properties represent best-in-class hotels offering authentic experiences and a sense of place unique to their own destinations,” said Steven Pelzer, executive VP of sales and marketing for The Lodge at Torrey Pines, said at a New York press event. “These industry leaders also have long-term management teams securely in place; this peace of mind is priceless for our loyal guests and dedicated staff.”

Pelzer said his property, which opened in 2002, was typical of the group in that the original management team is largely intact.

A number of resort representatives indicated that while the formation of the group was rooted in the difficult economy, these properties were doing better than their peers because of their long-term stability. However, they said it is a time when it is difficult to remain completely independent. They agreed their goal is to retain their independence while seeking any possible benefits from a cooperative effort.

R.D. Musser, president of the Grand Hotel, said performance at his property was down only 10 percent this year, which is better than the overall industry performance, but that this is a period when partnerships are critical.

A cooperative effort

Kindred emerged from previous cooperative efforts. The charter members have worked together in the past to purchase insurance and share best practices. There also have been less formal initiatives, such as combining marketing, sales and public relations resources. While some members do have other affiliations, like Leading Hotels of the World and Preferred Hotels & Resorts, they see this as different.

“Those groups do their job well, but it is a top-down formula for all members,” Riehle said. “We are trying to find a way where we can band together and yet maintain our individual personalities. The organization will grow organically; we will see where this takes us.”

The group will grow in numbers, he said, but does not intend to grow very large at any point. He said that while the Web site indicates the group was formed in partnership with the Resort Hotel Association, its mission would be different. The RHA was formed to achieve volume discounts on insurance coverage for independent resorts.

According to the announcement, the new Web site will serve as a one-stop shop for a variety of travel alternatives, as well as a portal for all the resorts to showcase initiatives. Future initiatives include consumer promotions and travel agent incentives. The leaders of the new group also held a reception in New York specifically for travel agents.

David Sklansky-Poker Player and Author
If you scan the bookshelf of any serious poker player, one author that will keep popping up is David Sklansky. Many popular online and offline pro players will tell you one of the first books they picked up as they were learning was one of Sklansky's.

Greg Raymer, 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event champion, even said in an interview the biggest influence on his game was Sklansky's The Theory of Poker.

David Sklansky's HOLD 'EM POKER. This is the book that started it all; the very first ever published specifically for Hold 'Em Poker. David Sklansky takes you though the game in a relatively short 111 pages covering all the basics of the game, as well as some of the more advanced concepts. However, don't be fooled by the lack of pages. David Sklansky packs more into 111 pages than Phil Hellmuth has crammed into two full books of over 550 pages combined.

David Sklansky is a professional gambler and poker player. He was approached to write this book as one of the leading poker theorists in the world. This is also a book that was first published in 1976, so I guess the first thing to address is whether or not a book this old could still be relevant in today's internet savvy, WSOP, WPT, TV world. The answer of course is yes, and even more so since the book was updated in 1997.

Most recently, he served with the Northwest Area Command. He is one of the most decorated Police Officers on the department holding commendations for "Valor", Meritorious Service" Community Service Award" and several "Lifesaving" awards.

Randy has also been featured on numerous episodes of the popular television show "COPS", "America's Most Wanted", "Cop Files" and co-starred in the pilot episode of "Las Vegas" with James Caan. Lawrence Joseph-Apocalypse 2012: An Investigation Into Civilization’s EndApocalypse 2012: An Investigation Into Civilization’s End

Over the past twenty five years, Lawrence E. Joseph has written on science, nature, politics and business on five continents for publications including The New York Times (Magazine, Op-Ed), Discover, Salon.com, and has also authored a number of books, detailed below.
Apocalypse 2012: An Investigation into Civilization’s End, published by Broadway/Random House in January, 2007, hardcover, and January, 2008, paperback, is a personal exploration of a strange coincidence, that both ancient Mayan prophecy and contemporary solar physics indicate that the year 2012 will be pivotal, perhaps catastrophic. What if there is some significance to this coincidence? The book examines a range of scenarios concerning civilization-threatening cataclysms that may well occur in 2012 or thereabouts. Apocalypse 2012 has sold more than 100,000 copies in 21 languages and editions.

“The governments of the world have adopted Climatism and discarded reality. Acres of solar cells sit idle at night and on cloudy days. Thousands of 300-foot-high wind towers interrupt the vistas of coastline, field, and hill, standing motionless for two-thirds of their existence. Thirty percent of America’s corn crop is burned up on U.S. highways, while people in developing nations struggle to get enough to eat. Billions of dollars in government subsidies are spent each year to fund solar, wind, and biofuel industries, which could not compete and would not exist without these subsidies. Yet, these renewable sources supply only a pitifully small amount of the world’s energy needs. All this in the absurd attempt to control a trace gas and stop global warming.”

—Climatism!, Chapter 13

John survived, but was physically and psychologically scarred to an extent that few people could comprehend. He withdrew from society, hid in his apartment and now only emerges to work as a crime researcher for a major newspaper. Damaged he may be, but no one in New York knows more about serial killers than John Costello. So, when a new spate of murders starts - all seemingly random and unrelated - John is the only one who can discern the complex pattern that lies behind them. 7/2 - Larry Manetti, Dandy Don,

Larry Manetti - "Aloha Magnum"
Larry Manetti started acting in his hometown of Chicago. After studying acting with the Ted List Theater Players, Larry drove to Los Angeles in 1972. Larry landed an agent and was sent to Universal Studios to audition for an opening as a contract player. Luck was on his side. Jack Webb was casting a new series for NBC called The Chase. Larry played a young detective. After attending acting school at Sal Dano's at night and doing bit parts by day, he scored. Baa Baa Black Sheep was being produced and cast at Universal, and the now famous writer Stephen J. Cannell was the executive producer and the role was a natural for Larry. He was cast as a cocky, hot shot pilot named Bobby Boyle. The show was a big hit for NBC but was cancelled within two years.  Because the network was so impressed with Larry's on-screen presence, they cast him in a new series called The Duke. Bad luck! The Duke was cancelled in one year. Larry was back to playing whatever Universal told him to.  Hoping to catch lighting in a jar, along came Magnum, P.I. and the role of Rick. This was his elevator...the show became a mega-hit for 8 years. Since Magnum, P.I., Larry has done co-starring roles in 25 feature films and guest starred on many hot TV shows.  Larry is the author of a book titled Aloha Magnum.  As for the future ... just follow his jet stream!

Dandy Don - "The Ice Cream Man"
Yes, Virginia, there is a Dandy Don. He sits quietly in his office smoking a cigar as you read this. So who is he? Below you can read the biography of this man and the company he built. Don Whittemore is a funny man with a huge personality who loves to make people happy. Good thing he makes ice cream, huh? Once Upon A Time (circa 1962 – 67), Don was a stand-up comedian. He worked under the name Don Harris in Atlanta, Miami Beach & Newport, KY.  If you have some free time one day, ask him to tell you some jokes. The next part of this biography starts just after that but still long long ago, in the Time Before CDs. Don was in the record business. He convinced DJs to play records by Frank Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles, David Bowie, and Cat Stevens . In the late ’70s, Don decided to leave the record business for good. Too much temptation for a family man, he thought. And too few creative DJs.In 1981 Don and his lovely wife Linda (pregnant with their second child) bought an ice cream shop in Tarzana, California called The Creamery. They thought it would be a gold mine. They were wrong. So they worked their keesters off, got into the wholesale business, and began a catering division. These are photos of Don   and Linda  at one of their first hot fudge sundae bar catering gigs at the Directors’ Guild of America. This is how the catering division of their company—now with over 1,000 customers—got its start. They no longer have The Creamery, or any retail shop. But they have begun putting their homemade ice cream into pints, so once again regular folks can buy their product retail. Funny how things come full circle, even if they do take 20+ years. Don’s favorite part of doing business is dealing with people. He loves talking to his clients, making ice cream with them, and helping them promote their businesses. He loves selling his ice cream to new clients, finding out what they want, tempting them with great service. He just loves people. And he loves making people happy. Good thing he makes great ice cream.

6/30 - Doctor Michael Ramsay , Andrew Sharon, Bruce Steart, Larry Lipson,

Doctor Michael Ramsay  "The July Effect"
New research shows that the “July effect” is real. There really is a greater chance of dying in the hospital during the month of July. That’s the word from researchers at UC San Diego. The scary statistics keep adding up. Thousands of people already in the hospital die of preventable problems.
The 2010 Patient Safety in American Hospitals study [published by HealthGrades] says more than 99-thousand patient deaths in U.S. hospitals could have been prevented. A new study by the University of California at San Diego [published in the latest edition of the Journal of General Internal Medicine] is now calling attention to the spike in fatal hospital errors during the month of July [known as the “July Effect”].  Our Guest is Dr. Michael Ramsay, anesthesiologist and respected expert in the fields of blood and pain management. He will discuss how new medical advancements and technologies are making lifesaving differences at hospitals across America. Each day, over 40,000 patient safety incidents occur at U.S. hospitals—costing $8.9B in excess healthcare costs. *Even a single incident increases the risk of death to 1 in 10. Deaths due to preventable errors spike during the month of July as new medical school graduates begin their residencies. Some hospitals are using new noninvasive, wireless medical technologies as a ‘safety net’ to directly prevent these deaths and injuries. Find out about these patient ‘safety nets’ and how they can protect you/your loved one.
