Dr. Richard A. Kahn - Chief Medical Officer - Building Healthier America
Approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million obese, and 9 million severely obese – and these numbers have continued to increase. Interestingly, the prevalence of being overweight is higher for men (67 percent) than women (62 percent). As the number on the scale gets higher, men need to know the High Five: testosterone, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar/glucose and diet. For an overweight man trying to lose weight, low testosterone (or Low T) – a chronic condition with symptoms like fatigue, decreased energy and reduced lean body mass – could have men spinning their wheels, impacting energy levels and sabotaging their efforts to lose weight. The High Five campaign launched by Building Healthier America – a new organization joining in the fight against the overweight/obesity epidemic in the US – aims to empower men who are willing to take control of their health in spite of their growing waistlines. This initiative also encourages men to have informed conversations with their physicians to determine if the High Five factors are affecting their overall efforts.
