HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM  "THE ERIK & JACK ATTACK"

Dr. Harold Katz  "Fresh Breath Doctor"
So, to start the New Year off right, you're going to hit the gym, the tanning booth and get contact lenses so you can get rid of those librarian glasses.  But what good does being fit and having a better look do if your breath could strip the varnish off a foot locker?
Dr. Harold Katz, Dentist to the Stars, believes that any new year's makeover needs to include fresher, cleaner breath to be complete.  "Because of the anatomy of our sense of smell, we cannot tell when we have bad breath, unless it's so bad, the dog leaves the room," he said. "The fact is, most people who think their breath is fine are mistaken. Most people don't have an oral hygiene regimen that includes therapy for their breath, and they really should."   Dr. Katz has a wide array of tips to help people maintain fresh, clean breath all day long.

  • What foods cause the worst bad breath?
  • What are the best foods to eat to prevent or minimize bad breath?
  • We know it smells bad, but what exactly is bad breath?
  • What are the most common causes of bad breath?
  • What are some common signs that you might have bad breath?
  • What is the self-administered bad breath test?
  • Can you avoid morning breath?
  • Can bad breath be a sign that you have other health issues?
  • What are some medications that cause bad breath?
  • Can regular, over-the-counter products treat halitosis?

James Wall -   "To Be an Agnostic"
To Be an Agnostic tackles the greatest questions in life from various religious, philosophical and historical perspectives. This is not a book attacking anyone's beliefs; it is a book about obtaining knowledge wherever it may be and using that knowledge to obtain truth.
Here are some of the benefits that will be derived by anyone who reads it Learn the agnostic approach to problem solving

  • Establish solid foundations of knowledge

  • Explore augmentation techniques

  • Make better decisions

  • Widen perspective to new views and definitions

  • Promote religious tolerance

  • Scrutinize what is good and what is evil
To be agnostic is to be without knowledge. To be without knowledge means knowledge needs to be obtained. To be an agnostic is to be a philosopher. Philosophy is the love of knowledge and wisdom. Acquiring true knowledge requires impeccable research and thinking, or philosophizing. This book is about knowledge and wisdom; there are countless instances where the absolute truth is unknown and therefore, theories are required. We need theories however, that are recognized for what they are. Simplicity is the essence of truth.

Gregg Dobbs  "Life in the Wrong Lane"
Greg Dobbs worked at ABC News for 23 years, first as a producer, then for most of his career as a correspondent, including ten years overseas. He covered major domestic and foreign stories including the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the first Gulf War, the revolution and then the occupation of the US embassy in Iran, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the civil war in and the ejection of the PLO from Beirut, the Iran-Iraq war, and the civil war and deaths of IRA hunger-strikers in Northern Ireland. Dobbs won two national Emmy Awards in the process, the first for "Best Spot News Coverage on a Network" for coverage of a terrible earthquake in Italy in 1980, the other for "Best Network Documentary" in 1989 for a documentary on the environmental poisoning of America. He also received the "Distinguished Service Award" from the Society of Professional Journalists. When ABC asked him in 1992 to move from his home in Colorado's Rocky Mountains to New York City, it took him approximately one nanosecond to say no. That led to a second career as a radio talk show host, a newspaper opinion columnist, and the television moderator of an Emmy Award winning discussion program on Rocky Mountain PBS. GregDobbs_studio2In 2003, Dobbs returned to the road as a correspondent for the all high-definition television network HDNet. It put him back on airplanes, reporting documentaries for the program "World Report" from around the country and around the world. He has produced and reported segments for World Report about Agent Orange in Vietnam, terrorism in Lebanon, politics in Russia, the post-Apartheid era in South Africa, wealth in Dubai, autocracy in Venezuela, assisted suicide in Switzerland, dirty water in Indonesia, post-war recovery in Liberia, cocaine in Bolivia, PTSD in the U.S. military, among many others. He has also reported extensively from Israel and the Palestinian territories.Dobbs also is the author of a university-level textbook on writing for broadcasting. It is called Better Broadcast Writing, Better Broadcast News. A native of San Francisco, Dobbs has been married to Carol for more than thirty-five years, and both their grown sons, Jason and Alex, are better skiers for sure, and probably better writers too, than their dad.

Major Mike Humphreys - NORAD NORTH CONTROL
For more than 50 years, NORAD and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) have tracked Santa's Christmas Eve flight. The tradition began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement for children to call Santa misprinted the telephone number. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD Commander-in-Chief's operations "hotline." The Director of Operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, had his staff check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Children who called were given updates on his location, and a tradition was born. In 1958, the governments of Canada and the United States created a bi-national air defense command for North America called the North American Aerospace Defense Command, also known as NORAD, which then took on the tradition of tracking Santa. Since that time, NORAD men, women, family and friends have selflessly volunteered their time to personally respond to Christmas Eve phone calls and emails from children. In addition, we now track Santa using the internet. Last year, millions of people who wanted to know Santa's whereabouts visited the NORAD Tracks Santa website. Finally, media from all over the world rely on NORAD as a trusted source to provide Christmas Eve updates on Santa's journey.

Jacob Ward  "Popular Science's Top 100"
Innovation manifests itself in myriad ways: groundbreaking, revolutionary bursts we'd never before imagined possible, or in more nuanced but no less brilliant refinements of existing technology. And while this year's list contains plenty of instances of the former, in compiling it we've noticed one thing: 2009 is the year of stealth innovation.  Here's what I love about the elegantly functional stethoscope that is the recipient of our 2009 Innovation of the Year award: It looks exactly like a stethoscope. Jointed arms connect earpieces to a black rubber tube that leads to a circular amplifier—you've seen one every time you've visited your doctor since you were born. It takes an observant eye to notice that on this one, there's a tiny screen on the back of that amplifier, and telltale + and – signs and a small power button that signify electronics in action. The creators of this high-tech medical tool have taken an instrument that's been central to medical diagnostics for 190 years and supercharged it, adding sophisticated hardware and software that record, transmit, and analyze vital data, dramatically improving doctors' ability to detect truly dangerous heart murmurs while eliminating the need for thousands of pricey echocardiograms a year. But from a design standpoint, I'm pleased to see that the stethoscope's reinventors have decided that it ain't broke, so don't fix it. Thus they've come up with a device that still carries all the Norman Rockwell–style reassurance of its predecessors.

Doug Crandell  "Fear Came to Town: The Santa Claus, Georgia Murders"
How is a person supposed to react after a horrible, horrible family tragedy?  There is no right way, and however, a person goes about living their lives in the face of abject tragedy, it's impossible not to sympathize.  There can't be a worse situation for someone in such a situation.  Former American Idol finalist and Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson endured the deaths of family members and even worse, so did the public eye.  There are so many others have experienced such tragic events and are never known.  Such is the case with in the small town of Santa Claus, Georgia.  A small town where the streets are name Candy Cane Road and December Drive and Christmas was the life blood of the people, and the holiday spirit lived all year around… UNTIL JERRY SCOTT HEIDLER CAME TO TOWN.  Years ago, Danny and Kim Daniels had taken in Jerry Scott Heidler as a foster child. Kim had grown up within the foster system herself, and she sympathized with the troubled boy. But it soon as became clear that Heidler's problems were far more disturbing than they had thought - and they cut him from their lives.  One terrible night in December 1997, Heidler broke into the home of his former foster family and with methodical madness shot Danny and Kim, teenage Jessica, and eight-year-old Bryant. He then kidnapped and brutalized the three surviving children, abandoning them on a remote dirt road in the dead of winter.  This is the chilling true story of a remorseless sociopath who destroyed the family that tried to rescue him, the trial that exposed his truly monstrous acts, and the town whose very heart was broken forever

Ken Kessler has been in radio for over twenty years, including morning shows in Raleigh, Cincinnati, Baltimore and Washington, DC. He became discouraged with traditional radio, particularly the way they handled Christmas music, and launched his own Christmas radio station (www.SoundsofChristmas.com) in 2007. The staggering number of talented singers and musicians that he's met along the way inspired him to connect with John and launch SOC Music. Through SOC Music, Ken is looking forward to getting more artists heard on traditional radio, as well as promoting their work through online radio, social networking sites and whatever comes next! Larry Manetti  -  "Aloha Magnum"
Larry Manetti   started acting in his hometown of Chicago.  After studying acting with the Ted List Theater Players, Larry drove to Los Angeles in 1972.  Larry landed an agent and was sent to Universal Studios to audition for an opening as a contract player.  Luck was on his side.  Jack Webb was casting a new series for NBC called  The Chase.  Larry played a young detective.  After attending acting school at Sal Dano's at night and doing bit parts by day, he scored.  Baa Baa Black Sheep was being produced and cast at Universal, and the now famous writer Stephen J. Cannell was the executive producer and the role was a natural for Larry.  He was cast as a cocky, hot shot pilot named Bobby Boyle.  The show was a big hit for NBC but was cancelled within two years. Because the network was so impressed with Larry's on-screen presence, they cast him in a new series called The Duke.  Bad luck!  The Duke was cancelled in one year.  Larry was back to playing whatever Universal told him to.  Hoping to catch lighting in a jar, along came Magnum, P.I. and the role of Rick. This was his elevator...the show became a mega-hit for 8 years.  Since Magnum, P.I., Larry has done co-starring roles in 25 feature films and guest starred on many hot TV shows.  Larry is the author of a book titled Aloha Magnum.

Elmo Shropshire (Dr. Elmo)  "Grandma Got Runover By a Reindeer"
Elmo Shropshire - a.k.a DR. ELMO - is best-known for his recording of "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer," the Christmas classic which has sold more than 10 million copies since it was first broadcast by a San Francisco radio station in 1979. Consistently the most requested holiday song of the past two decades, "Grandma" has secured its place in American pop culture and made Dr. Elmo the king of comedy carols. Each December, radio stations throughout the country call Dr. Elmo for his Christmas commentary and live on-air renditions of "that Grandma song." With the quirky sing-a-long as centerpiece, a radio visit from Dr. Elmo has become part of the nation's holiday tradition.  As a whole new generation sings along, Dr. Elmo continues to spread good cheer in his chats with disc jockeys and their listeners all across America. Along the way, he has released two CDs of seasonal satire, appeared on many television programs and been the subject of numerous magazine and newspaper articles.  That this Lexington, Kentucky, native would ride a reindeer to success is a slightly different scenario than the namesake of famed jockey and horse trainer Elmo Shropshire might have envisioned. After working alongside his father in the Bluegrass State and at racetracks in Florida, the future Dr. Elmo earned his degree in veterinary medicine and tended to the thoroughbreds of New York's Aqueduct and Belmont Park racetracks.  A move to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he established his own animal hospital, was his proverbial changing of the horses in the middle of the stream. He became a competitive runner. His bluegrass band performed in venues throughout Northern California. And, in 1979, he came upon a little song written by his friend Randy Brooks that everyone but Elmo agreed was one of the weirdest Christmas songs they had ever heard. "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" immediately became a regional phenomenon. Picketed by ageism-protesting Gray Panthers during a local performance, Elmo soon found himself interviewed on the Bay Area's airwaves and beyond. His distinctive voice led to castings and voice-overs in national advertising campaigns. When MTV began airing the campy video of this stranger-than-strange holiday song in 1983, it surpassed Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" on Billboard's Christmas charts. The song and its singer were off to the races.  Today, "Grandma" romps in the Marin County fields of Laughing Stock Records, where it has sired numerous songs included on the label's full-length CD releases "Up Your Chimney," "Dr. Elmo's Twisted Christmas," "Love, Death and Taxes" and "Dr. Elmo's Twisted Tunes."  Elmo is still running, too, maintaining a 25-mile weekly training schedule in the nearby hills. In the past year, he was first in his age division at Silicon Valley's prestige Compaq 10K and finished second in the San Francisco and Humbolt half marathons. Every Christmas, he dons his traditional red and green silks and heads off for the holiday's annual run for the roses. As December 25th approaches, Dr. Elmo and his "Grandma" song come round the stretch and triumphantly gallop toward the finish line - a yearly Christmas Eve performance where he is joined in the winner's circle by fans, friends, family and band for a rousing celebration.  Dr. Elmo, D.V.M, has always known how to nurture a long shot. More than twenty-five years after he first led it to the starting gate, the dark horse song has won the Triple Crown.

Kathy L' Amour discusses great western writer, Louis L' Amour
Louis L'Amourhas been writing stories of heroes and their struggles long before the
Stephenie Meyer's Edward Cullens of today. He's told tales of honest thieves and crooked lawmen, of dream chasers and treasure hunters, of men and women hoping for a second chance and others down to their last breath.  He's told of faraway places where women and men's strength is tested against avalanches, guns, and the struggles of the western frontier. And now, these stories have been
compiled into one book; The collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour. After his death in 1988, John J. Miller says in the
Wall Street Journal, "he is no longer a mere literary phenomenon but a broadly cultural one." Louis L'Amour's wife, Kathy, has taken great pride in bringing you the opportunity to be able to ask her the questions we've all wanted to know. Where has Louis L'Amour's inspiration come from? What is his favorite story? Are any of the characters based on real people? She can answer all this and more. Louis L'Amour, the ex-boxer, merchant seaman, cattle-skinner, and occasional silver miner from North Dakota is the only American-born author in history to receive both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. He has published ninety novels; twenty-eight short-story collections; two works of non fiction; a memoir, Education of a Wandering Man; and a volume of poetry, Smoke From This Altar. Louis L'Amour died in 1988 and is survived by his widow Kathy, his son Beau, and his daughter Angelique. In March 2008, L'Amour was named by The Library of Congress and its Center for the Book as the Center's inaugural "Champion of the Book"—a unique designation reserved for those who have made an important contribution to the world of books.

Barry McGuire  "Eve Of Destruction" We remember back 44 years ago to the first real war protest song from a then 16 year old Barry Mcguire and hang on caause Barry will be with us in just a second with a brand new version of "Eve of Destruction" but first  Grab your tamborine, love beads and tie dye shirts and sing along.'  I'd heard the first Dylan album with electrified instruments. This is strange, but it's really true: I gave Phil Sloan a pair of boots and a hat and a copy of the Dylan album, and a week later he came back with ten songs, including "Eve of Destruction." It was a natural feel for him - he's a great mimic. Anyway I was afraid  of the song. I didn't know if we could get it played (on the radio). But the next night Iwent to Ciro's, where the Byrds were playing. It was the beginning of the freak period.... there was this subculture that no one in L.A. knew about, not even me, and it was growing. The Byrds were the leaders of the cult, and the place was jam-packed, spilling out on to the street. ln the middle of it was this guy in furs, with long hair, and dancing; I thought he looked like a leader of a movement. Terry Melcher told me that he was Barry McGuire, and that he'd sung with the New Christy Minstrels. A week later we cut the record and it sold six million. I didn't think it was a copy of anything. It was the first rock'n'roll protest song and Sloan laid it down in very simple terms, not like the folk people were doing. If you listen to the song today, it holds up all the way - it's the same problems. It's certainly an honest feeling, from a 16 year old. "Eve of Destruction" is aprotest songwritten byP. F. Sloanin 1965. Several artists have recorded it, but the best-known recording was byBarry McGuire. This recording was made betweenJuly 12andJuly 15,1965and released byDunhill Records. The accompanying musicians were top-tierLAsession men:P.F. Sloanonguitar,Hal Blaine(ofPhil Spector's "Wrecking Crew") ondrums, andLarry Knechtelonbass. The vocal track was thrown on as a rough mix and was not intended to be the final version, but a copy of the recording "leaked" out to a DJ, who began playing it . The song was an instant hit and as a result the more polished vocal track that was at first envisioned was never recorded.

Chris O'Dell  - "MISS O’DELL: My Hard Days and Long Nights with The Beatles, The Stones, Bob  Dylan, Eric Clapton, and the Women they Loved"
George Harrison wrote a song for her ("Miss O'Dell"), as did her boyfriend, Leon Russell ("Pisces Apple Lady"). She was there on the roof of Apple when the Beatles  famously performed "Hey Jude" on TV. She watched as they recorded at Abbey Road, and was best friends with George's wife, Pattie Boyd. She had affairs with Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan. O'Dell and Joni Mitchell vied for the attention of Sam Shepard while on the road with Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue (Mitchell referred to her in the song "Coyote" as "the woman down the hall").

Lt. General (USMC-Ret.) Henry P. (Pete) Osman, President and CEO of the Marine  Toys for Tots FoundationAt a time when many charities are reporting an increased demand for their services, only 38 percent of Americans say they will give a charitable gift this holiday, compared to 49 percent last year according to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive.  The good news is that although fewer people plan to give, one charity is making it easy for people to brighten a child's holiday and improve that child’s chance at academic success. The Toys for Tots Literacy Program, the first year-round initiative of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, was launched in 2008. Since then, its Buck-a-Book project has enabled the program to deliver nearly one million books to less-fortunate children to improve their chances for academic success. This holiday season, Americans can help the literacy program reach its million book goal by making a cash donation at participating The UPS Store locations or online at www.toysfortotsliteracy.org.  Every one  dollar donated will buy a book for a local child in need.

AUTHOR "FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS" JAMES BRADLEY-- New Book:

"THE IMPERIAL CRUISE: A Secret History of Empire and War"

I was born in Wisconsin surrounded by a loving family of ten and loved swimming in cold lakes. When I was a boy I read an article by former president Harry Truman recommending that young people read historical biographies. He said it was easy to follow the storyline of a historical figure's life, and you'll learn the surrounding history on the journey. When I was thirteen years old I read an article by James Michener in Reader's Digest which I paraphrase: "When you're twenty-two and graduate from college, people will ask you, 'What do you want to do?' It's a good question, but you should answer it when you're thirty-five." Michener explained that his experiences wandering the globe as a young man later inspired his book on Afghanistan, Spain, Japan and other places. When I was nineteen years old, I lived and studied in Tokyo for one year. I later brought my Japanese friends home to Wisconsin. My father, John Bradley, had helped raise an American flag on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima and had shot a Japanese soldier dead. John Bradley welcomed my friends to our home. I traveled around the world when I was twenty-one, from the U.S. to Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, France, Germany, Italy, England and back to the United States. At twenty-three I graduated with a degree in East Asian history from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. For the next twenty years I worked in the corporate communications industry in the United States, Japan, England and South Africa. In my late thirties I took a year off to go around the world again. On this trip I made it to base camp on Mt. Everest and walked among lions in Africa. My father died when I was forty years old. My search to find out why he didn't speak about Iwo Jima led me to write Flags of Our Fathers and establish the James Bradley Peace Foundation. Flags of Our Fathers went on to be a bestseller and a movie, but few saw its potential at first. In fact, as this New York Times article documents, twenty-seven publishers turned my idea down. This difficult and humbling twenty-five month birthing process inspired my live presentation Doing the Impossible. In 2001 a WWII veteran of the Pacific revealed to me that the U.S. government had kept secret the beheading deaths of eight American airmen on the Japanese island of Chichi Jima, next door to Iwo Jima. After researching their deaths, I informed the eight families and the world of the unknown facts in my book second book Flyboys. (One flyboy got away. His name was George Herbert Walker Bush.) After writing two books about WWII in the Pacific, I began to wonder about the origins of America's involvement in that war. The inferno that followed Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor had consumed countless lives, and believing there's usually smoke before a fire, I set off to search for the original spark. The result of that search is my third book, The Imperial Cruise. I am working on my fourth book, about Franklin Delano Roosevelt and China. For the past ten years, the James Bradley Peace Foundation and Youth For Understanding have sent American students to live with families overseas. Perhaps in the future when we debate whether to fight it out or talk it out, one of these Americans might make a difference. Above my desk are the framed words of James Michener:"Just because you wrote a few books, the world is not going to change. You will find that you will go to sleep and awaken as the same son-of-a-bitch you were the day before."

Barry McGuire "Eve Of Destruction"

On Pearl Harbor day we remember back 44 y7ears ago to the first real war protest song from a then 16 year old Barry Mcguire and hang on caause Barry will be with us in just a second with a brand new version of "Eve of Destruction" but first Grab your tamborine, love beads and tie dye shirts and sing along.' LOU ADLER:

I'd heard the first Dylan album with electrified instruments. But the next night I went to Ciro's, where the Byrds were playing. "Eve of Destruction" is a protest song written by P. F. Sloan in 1965. Several artists have recorded it, but the best-known recording was by Barry McGuire. This recording was made between July 12 and July 15, 1965 and released by Dunhill Records. The accompanying musicians were top-tier LA session men: P.F. Sloan on guitar, Hal Blaine (of Phil Spector's "Wrecking Crew") on drums, and Larry Knechtel on bass. The vocal track was thrown on as a rough mix and was not intended to be the final version, but a copy of the recording "leaked" out to a DJ, who began playing it . The song was an instant hit and as a result the more polished vocal track that was at first envisioned was never recorded.
